10: Original (or just epic for LoGH) + good music + great characterization with a coordinated and logical plot + fantastic art and generally just super sparkles.
9: Like a 10 without the sparkles.
8: Basically a good anime, couple minor issues or just lacking innovation (romcoms anyone?).
7: More noticeable continuity problems or strange/illogical character developments, or just not terribly interesting. I wouldn't rewatch anything at this score, but it was alright for one sit-through.
6: Reliance on outside sources for information (Berserk/Claymore), beating a dead horse (Fumoffu), introduction of unnecessary/confusing elements (almost every character in Angel Beats! or Ga-Rei: Zero), dumb fluff (Zero no Tsukaima), just not my cup of tea (Shugo Chara!! Doki), or made by JC Staff in the last few years. I wish I could regain the time I spent watching these shows.
5: Everything in 6, but worse.
4-: Shows made by 8-year-olds! That's right Jyu Oh Sei, I'm looking at you.
My biggest factors are plot continuity and character development. So long as an anime tells its story well and has a fairly interesting cast, it's something I like.

Pretty much anything with a surrealist setting interests me, whether it has action or not.
