Can't see why you would either lol, heard the upscale quality is pretty good on the Vita TV as well.
I'm a bit worried about the length of time between releases too, but have faith in the creators to do the original justice whether it takes a couple years or not(which is also my guess for how long it's going to be). Have you seen this new concept art for Sector 8? Looks great so far, I can only imagine what they'll do with some of the later areas.
Yeah, I was not a fan of the change in tone after the ending of CS1, especially since that was what made me like it so much. Let me know how it plays out, I might play it myself once part 3 comes out. Also, you did guess right, that reusing of areas is present in the other games as well, but they add some new areas once you progress more with the story from what I remember. Thankfully, the Liberl and Crossbell games can be run on a toaster so you don't even need to fork out much cash to get something that runs them. That reminds me, didn't you purchase a Vita solely for P4G or did you play other games?
I have to say the game I'm most excited for is the Final Fantasy VII remake, will probably completely reignite my love for JRPGs. I haven't played any for like six months now.
Nice, seems like you really liked it then. The world-building in CS1 is definitely one of it's good points, I agree with you that the characters could have been less trope heavy especially the male characters as I didn't really grow attached to them at all which is completely different when it comes to the other games in the franchise. Trails games tend to end with a cliffhanger, but I didn't like how CS relies too much on the amnesia plot device with Rean, also was expecting better romance options with girls besides Alisa(although I'm not sure how games 2-4 expand on that, so probably better not to judge it too harshly there).
Despite my issues with it, it's a great JRPG, it stayed fresh throughout by letting you get to know each of the characters little by little and I liked the way exploring new towns felt like a field trip with your classmates and had a new story every time. Character bonding/social links is a feature I really love in Persona so I liked how CS implemented it's own version of that. Still gotta say to try to play Trails in the Sky when you can, the character development is insane with a highly immersive world and probably the best romance story from any JRPG. Are you going to play CS2 next?
I don't have a PS4 anymore since I prefer PC and I really don't like how Sony explicitly goes after all anime fan service in games released on their console nowadays.
Yeah, Trails of Cold Steel is great, I think I recommended it in one of my earlier replies. The whole LOH/Trails series are amazing games, it's recommended to start with Liberl Saga(Trails in the Sky) though since it works as a good introduction to the world and lore, you will miss out on a lot of references by playing Cold Steel first. Not to mention that Cold Steel is still an unfinished story, while Liberl and Crossbell have 5 games total and complete stories, Cold Steel Part 4 won't be released in the west for at least a couple more years. I also felt the first game was lacking when it came to the character building and ost, but the combat and Persona-like school life feel did make it a lot of fun. I recommend also keeping up with all of the NPCs in town as you're always updating your journal with new information about them and I heard there's a lot of returning characters in later games. I have only finished Cold Steel 1, but I was pretty disappointed with the ending, let me know what you think of it whenever you finish it. I played some of the second game but put it on hold since I want to wait until the rest of the series is finished.
Overall, I liked Trails in the Sky FC and SC a bit more, some of the best JRPGs I've ever played. Cold Steel does have the best girls though, my favorites were Fie, Emma and Laura(too bad there's basically a canon pairing already as you will easily be able to tell early on).
Nice, I'm pretty excited for Endgame as well. Infinity War's ending hit me like a train, especially Spider man's death.... ;(
The main thing I'm concerned about is I hope everyone isn't brought back right away, I am more curious as to how they will tell the story with most of the big heroes not in the picture. I'm guessing they will defeat Thanos and use the time stone to bring everyone back, but I'm praying that it's executed properly. Thanos was an awesome villain, I like IW's approach in how it builds him into one of the most overpowered supervillains in the MCU. I haven't seen Captain Marvel yet, but I read some spoilers and it's quite underwhelming knowing how strong she is and how she got her powers, hopefully Endgame can do the story justice, but we'll see. I plan on seeing it this Tuesday when theaters are less crowded.
And I've heard One Piece has been heating up lately, I need to get caught up here soon.
I see you started reading Berserk, hope you're enjoying it so far. The further you get into it the better it becomes, I remember my hype reading the GA arc and I read around 200 chapters in a few days lol. It does decline a bit later on, but not as much as the community likes to suggest. Definitely one of the greatest manga of all time when looking at the work in it's entirety.
Looks really good, the new member and all the added extras look too good to pass up. Good thing I never did a replay of it, it looks like they changed some of the previous boss fights and character arcs too. Instant buy for sure.
What have you been up to, play anything good lately?
Nice, whenever I get back on my JRPG grind I’ll be sure to play those first and I’ll let you know what I think. I’m more of a consumer than a collector, but I wish I could collect all my favorite games and anime lol. I usually can only afford to buy manga and light novel volumes every now and then, but I own 36 volumes which cost me only around 400 dollars over the span of years so it’s really not that impressive... I buy PS4 games sometimes, but the last game I bought was P5 in November, so yeah it’s been a while.
Have you ever considered watching Monster? It’s addicting af lol, looking at your favorites I think you would like it.
That's cool man, I always kind of overlooked X since I hear a lot of mixed opinions about it, but knowing that you've played more FF games than me and would put it that high means I need to at least give it a try. Would you recommend the PS2 or the remastered version?
Yeah, I have watched both the LOTR and GoT and I love them lol. Looking at some of the art from the game looks intriguing and the battle system doesn't look too bad. It's a shame what you said about the characters though, but I'm curious to find out personally what makes it one of the best from the series. Have you ever played any of the Dragon Quest series? Arguably one of the most well-received and longest running JRPG series around, the tone is not as serious as some top games from the FF series, but it has a certain charm to it that I grew to love after beating near half of all the games.
I've heard about disc 2 of Xenogears having poor pacing and extremely text heavy so a lot of players get thrown off when playing it, but I've also heard some players call it the best part of the game and when the story takes off. I saw some of the battle system early on though and was not impressed. I absolutely love mindfuck stories so you got me hyped haha. Thanks for the info!
Also thought I would mention that I tried FF XV and wasn’t impressed at all. I got maybe 15 hours in before getting bored with the characters and story.
JRPG’s for the most part, I haven’t been much into the modern JRPG scene for a while though, recently I’ve been more into highly regarded older games like Dragon Quest IV-VIII, Trails in the Sky, Final Fantasy VI and IX are the most recent classic JRPG’s I played and loved. The newer recent ones I’ve played are Dragon Quest 11, Persona 5, Tales of Berseria and Trails of Cold Steel last year. All pretty great games for the most part and I still plan to play Nier: Automata and Trails of Cold Steel 3 and 4 when they come out.
Next on my list is Xenogears and Final Fantasy VII, but I’ve been really into visual novels and having a lot of fun there so not really feeling games atm.
I am kind of picky with games I play lol, but if you think FF 12 is a great game, I’ll think about checking it out one day.
If I had anything I would definitely recommend it would be Dragon Quest VIII or Trails in the Sky. The only JRPG in recent years I can even compare to the quality of those is Persona 5 and those games are 10+ years old lol. Most recent JRPG’s aren’t as impressive to me as some of the older ones imo, but it’s my favorite game genre for sure. I like games that have a huge and immersive world to explore, great music, deep stories and characters, and gameplay that keeps you engaged, another thing I really like is when every NPC offers interesting and worthwhile conversation/mini stories (Trails series does this the best in that you actually keep up with many different NPCs as you go along with the story, and it feels like they actually grow with you. For example, two characters might hint about feelings for each other when first meeting them and you revisit the city randomly later in the game and they’re married.) Graphics are one aspect that matters the least to me, but good graphics can enhance an already great game. The things I mentioned above are what matter the most when finding a JRPG I can really enjoy and appreciate.
Tales of Vesperia was pretty good and another one of my well-liked modern JRPG’s, although I still think it doesn’t hold a candle to games like FF VI, DQ V or VIII, or Trails in the Sky SC. I remember you telling me about Nier and I know I need to play it soon lol, but other than that, I don’t see a lot of recent JRPG’s that seem interesting. Maybe Breath of the Wild or Xenoblade Chronicles 2, although the issue with those is that I don’t own a Switch or any Nintendo console for that matter.
Yeah, Rise is hot I agree with you there lol. Lovers arcana is usually my first choice when romancing the girls for some reason, except in P3 the clear best girl was the Empress (Mitsuru). I would recommend trying out FES one day, I think it holds up to the later games and the story and characters seem average at first, but really grow on you. It has an edgy feel to it though which could be a turn off to some, but the story was surprisingly dark and heart-wrenching towards the end compared to 4 and 5. I don’t think it’s playable on PS4 though and the dungeons were even more repetitive than P4 so I’m not sure if you would be able to get into it.
I liked Naoto, but yeah she was introduced far too late for me to explore her character enough. There’s actually a lot of things I missed that would make seeking out P4G worthwhile, definitely someday I’ll have to do that (on hard most likely).
Visual novels are a medium I think anyone can enjoy who likes long stories with huge amounts of payoff, one thing I love about them is how you can explore the story in multiple different ways and analyze the story and characters more deeply compared to most anime and manga. I started reading them at the start of this year and have been hooked ever since lol. They have so many different ways of telling the story that are simply impossible to pull off in anime and manga, it just comes down to how patient the reader is.
I’ve played some of Danganronpa, but stopped since I got interested in other things. It has more gameplay than other VN’s I’ve played and very stylish character design, I think it’s a perfect starting point into the medium for you though since I imagine you would prefer something that feels more like a game than a novel.
And hell yeah I love Aria. I missed it so much after first watching it, I went straight into the manga. I’m sure it’s something I’ll be revisiting from time to time for years to come.
Nice, glad you liked it man. I personally didn’t have an issue with the pacing, but I also didn’t play Golden so I’m not completely sure of all the extras that were added. The big issue I found with Golden is that a lot of the bosses (at least in normal mode) are unnecessarily nerfed to be a lot easier. In Normal mode P4, I always had to change around my active persona list just to beat certain bosses which I liked the challenge there. Teddy took me hours of trial and error, but in Golden his health is halved and he uses two turns at once instead of three which makes it a lot easier.
Who was your fav girl? Best romance was Rise for sure, but I grew a soft spot for Chie as a best friend, seeing her insecurities about herself and staying true to her tomboy nature was touching, she has the best personality for sure.
I have heard of P5 R, but I’m waiting to see how much additional content there is before considering buying it. I still haven’t done my New Game+ yet lol, so maybe I could just play that instead.

Thanks for the info, seems like it only goes up from here.
One thing I can say is that the art looks beautiful in these earlier chapters.

Btw, have you ever tried out visual novels?
