Wait till Heaven's Feel comes out then you'll understand how truly terrible Sakura is. Anyway the thing about Shirou is that he's aware of his own abnormality his whole life revolves around a childish promise to help others and become a hero, everyone tells him that it's crazy and he agrees but he's addicted to his ideals they are the only thing he truly has. When he lost his memories he became an empty vessel that copied all of Kiritsugu's ideals but none of the feelings behind them , it's even reflected in his Noble Phantasm that creates fakes with reduced rank. But why does he stupidly (and yes I agree it's stupid) adhere to childish dreams? The first human interaction and image of happiness he had was of Kiritsugu saving somebody, of him being a hero as an empty shell he wanted to experience some of that true happiness for himself and so he became obsessed with becoming a hero, eventually however he went into the real world and much like Kiritsugu found that it did not treat heroes kindly he became increasingly jaded and cynical but still refused to abandon his dream till he died and became Archer. Archer returns to stop him, he rejects Archer's words the world still kills him but he's his time he derives satisfaction in knowing he became a real hero and just like Kiritsugu and his grandfather he died for an impossible ideal.
Sorry for the rant but Stupid≠Bad character.

Technically Sakura is the worst character in Fate and Shirou is actually pretty good.

Read your review on Room Mates/One Room. Your right, these kind of anime are really really bad, but hysterically bad. You are missing out on the fantastically fun possibilities to be had with them. You get some mates round and add your own dialogue. Best fun ever! For example - The start of Episode 5, Heims doing pull ups add "I want to be an air force ranger. I want to live a life of danger. I don't want to get raped by Aestas", and you have a totally differnt scenario to the one shown. Aestas was very upset and jealous in that episode. And can i just say, Heims dancing pecs had me in tears of laughter. Nothing beats Makura no Danshi though for ad-libbing fun. So many characters and situations to play with. We added a quote or two from Deliverance to one of the episodes and voila a gem in the making . Best party game whether your sober or 'ahem' slightly inebriated.

Nice Mahoka review, I haven't seen it yet but I might. I heard things from both the fans and haters so I havent decide but posdibly just to see the fuss.The light novel is licenced by Yen Press and is coming out next mouth so that's always an option.
