It feels like the germany in izetta was meant to be some weird fusion between Hitler's Germany and the 2nd Reich with the Kaiser but it's pretty poorly explored so wtevr

I don't NEED cute girls, but I don't avoid them either. I'll add Valkyria Chronicles to the list, thanks. A lot of the 'military' genre anime I watch also happen to be mecha shows, so it really limits the exploration of military themes to 'there is an organization with an army of robots.' Out of all of those, maybe you'd get something out of Gasaraki. It's more politically strategic than anything, but I can't get enough people to watch that one.

I lean a bit more to the side of it being a more "we want no nazis" side of the argument, and also yes they are a far cry from nazis. I have not seen or read Gate, so I can not add anything to that.

I think yuri was supposed to be the primary selling point, though I can understand picking it up for the setting. I dropped mainly because it seemed like it was going to be one of THOSE shows, with the drama of the first episode coming from the death of some no-name we didn't even meet (or something like that, it's been a while). Cute girls and a military setting never seem to mesh anyway, which is why Sora no Woto was so bad (haven't seen Girls und Panzer yet so maybe I shouldn't make that judgement), but whatever.

(Also saw Pumpkin Scissors in your list, so thanks for the indirect recommendation, not sure if I would have found that otherwise).

I do agree with you that Germanians are far from being Nazis. But, I'll just say that my thought process was "Okay, They're German, it's a WW2 setting, let's put two and two together, okay they're Nazis." Not the most sturdy of logic, but I do hope you see my point.

In terms of it being a whitewash attempt of WW2...I don't necessarily see what you mean.

Really enjoyed reading your Izetta review. You write from a perspective a lot of people watching lesbian witches just don't think about. Makes me feel a little less bad for dropping after the first ep.
