What can I say, that's my usual length of responses, I don't want my interlocutor to have any questions about simpler things, might as well cover most of the material. The two titles you've chosen are definitely good, both being reboots of the original series. Of course, the older ones are recommended if you want to see how the series have started, but nothing stops you from checking them out later on as a curiosity if you'll like the newer installments. :)
Haha, what can I say, it piled up over the years :D
Go Nagai is my personal favourite mangaka of all times. I got into his works thanks to Devilman which popped up in the suggestions of, I think it was the Fist of the North Star, certain old anime I've watched. And I still admit that Devilman is his best work - the violence is great, the story is surpringly symbolic and deep without being pretentious or convoluted (Nagai himself always sticks to very simple stories, so Devilman is unique in that regard) and the animation of the OVA really looks great. And the music... Holy crap, is it good. Nagai is a huge fan of Heavy Metal and you can imagine my face when I found out that this band is from Japan too. The English pronunciation is so good that no modern animu with their engrish gets any sympathy from me - Japanese can sing in English if they want. As for the Nagai's works, mangas are mostly the way to go. Devilman OVAs are decent, but they leave out a lot of story while the TV series was a toned down show with its own monster of the week plot, and in all honesty, it was just bad. Devilman also had a post-apocalyptic sequel called Violence Jack, which never got fully translated as a manga, while the OVAs are just randomly chosen chapters from it with no plot whatsoever. Even if I do admit that the second Violence Jack OVA is really fun to watch if you're into '80s over the top gore.
The other popular Nagai work, Mazinger Z, is a simple monster of the week anime which hasn't aged well. You've had the mad scientist named Doctor Hell who wanted to take over the world with his monsters and a group of teenagers who protected the innocent with a giant robot. However, the sequels, especially Mazinkaiser, started introducing Nagai's trademark tropes - over the top action, violence and nudity and psychotic protagonists. That's right, Nagai's heroes ar eusually maniacs who just want to burn, destroy and crush everything they see because they love it, no angsty edginess, in toher words - this is how you craft the anti-heroes :D That's all I can say. This Opening is the Nagai's style in a nutshell.
And then we get to another popular Mecha title from this author, which is Getter Robo. Now tha tis my second favourite right after Devilman. The plot goes like this - the dinosaurs actually survived the meteorite by escaping into a different dimension and now they come back as creatures evolved into more human form, wanting to take the Earth back from humans. That causes the obligatory genius scientist to assemble a group of teenagers who then receive a bunch of smaller robots who can combine into one big robot to fight the dinosaurs :D What I like about Getter Robo is that even the first anime/manga aged relatively well. It's nonsensical, obviously, but it's supposed to be. In later installments we once again get psychotic anti-heroes replacing our teenagers, robots bigger than whole galaxies (No, TTGL wasn't the first one to introduce this) and generally the whole universe getting a major expansion with more villains and over the top plot points. Basically, Go Nagai takes the things we loved as boys and serves them with the adult spice, making them a great treat for an adult viewer, which is something I like about him the most. That's also why he replaced Leiji Matsumoto as my favourite artist - don't get me wrong, Matsumoto is a wonderful, influential mangaka, but his works tend to get stale and rather preachy here and there. Especially when you watch them one after another. That's pretty much a reason why I prefer Galaxy Express 999 as a movie rather than the series. Granted, TV series meant more scenes with Maetel, but damn, was it getting stale as far as the repeated themes go. That and the fact that Matsumoto has shot himself in the foot with his Toki no Wa concept, which creates a complete chaos when you try to come up with a coherent timeline for his titles - he basically stated that every single title is a different timeline and everything is connected, but at the same time it's not.
Great taste! :) It's always nice to see a fellow Hentai Kamen fan, this manga deserves an anime adaptation so much... preferrably made by Go Nagai, I wouldn't entrust this title to anyone else, even if the Live Action movie was pretty hilarious too (it was the movie that made me realize that Hentai Kamen exists int he first place). You know the manga is great when its Live Action adaptation isn't so bad it's good or worse.
