Personally I like the Stand Alone Complex series better. It's the best of both worlds of the manga and the movie. It has the more realistic feel of the movie while still have a sense of humor but not too goofy like in the manga.
Also since you like Mafia themed stories. You might like Gungrave. As far as video game adaptations go, it's really damn good (I know that's not saying much but still).
I suppose I'm either disappointed often or not as easily impressed with things. It's not limited to anime either. I have to go by "feel" too when rating since I'm not as perceptive, comprehensive, or expressive as I'd like to be from a critical standpoint.
Winter 2015 looks like a disaster in the making. Then again, I'm not following the sequel works for Durarara, JoJo, and Kuroko. Honestly though, I have no idea what to say or expect from whatever else is dropping then!
Fair for me translates to "below average," but not something completely subpar or wasteful. They're rougher, more squandering of opportunities, and more forgettable than 5s in general. A 5 is something that sits in the middle of the pack. They can have serious ups and downs, or they can also be consistent at the cost of risk-taking and ambition. Usually they present a good deal of entertainment value or something to take away. Overall, I'd recommend anything I find to be 5 or better.
I love red hair! Hopefully it all works out and a few others step up too.
My emphasis is on critical damage over critical thought. It's all about disrespecting and disregarding anything on any given day if possible. No idea what "settling for less" is all about...
I'm starting to get that same "so bad its good" feel with Shirobako and Girlfriend from this season. Girlfriend has all the female tropes I rag on, yet I'm weak to cute and innocent schoolgirls being positive and having fun. I know girls have to be smarter and more diverse than the dummies from that one! Shirobako is about the thousand faces of Aoi Miyamori. Such a wicked awesome MC to lead a group of mostly bums. Would you recommend I torture myself furthermore with Grisaia or something?
Aside from NGNL, I also thought of Norgami from earlier this Winter and ZnT being similar category-wise. Just look at the member counts for each. Yikes! They all sorely lack in story and characterization. Maybe I'm in the wrong field of interest then... haha
haha damn man! You killed 'em with the basement dweller reference.
I'm with you though in that there needs to be a collective overhaul or something with the fans and industry itself. It's not that there weren't bad shows a decade or two ago, but it's sad to see how some works today are beat visually by stuff from over ten years ago. I would be inclined to think technique and consistency nowadays would be miles ahead of yesterday. I mean, shows from this season like Ushinawareta, Grisaia, and Twintails had me really scratching my head to end their respective premieres. Even Mushishi had a few lapses too, though I think those can be cleaned up for the disc release.
Nonetheless, there are still a few gems being churned out. Lot of other factors to consider too, but I personally have no plans to settle for average and mediocre offerings.
haha if you think the first season of DaL is terrible, I'd be curious as to know what you think of the second season when you get around to it. You might find Super Sonico to be fairly enlightening or even terrifying. That's one anime that tries to be everything and ends up with nothing instead.
Content really comes and goes nowadays with things being more short-term, cashing in on the moment with glittery animation, trivial humor and references, and suggestive exploits rather than cutting deep with a sharp-edged cast and narrative. Too much abuse with the high school scene too.
haha I'd look on the bright side though if I were you. I sat through quite the atrocities in Date a Live II, Mekakucity, and Super Sonico that would make Zankyou no Terror and Psycho-Pass look like untouchable classics. But yeah it was a pretty bad experience going through ZnT. I really wanted to know more about the two boys, their time in confinement, and their personal goals/motives. I was hoping that Five would do more than "end her own career" near the end. Heck, what was that game in the airport all about too? Even NGNL did chess better!
I take it that you're big into the hardcore seinen goods too then. Right on! We could sure use a few more anime like those ones nowadays. Baccano! is one of only a handful of shows I watched in dub. They nailed it with the accents and setting.
