The following is a description of how I rate anime. When I feel that I liked an anime more than it deserves, I will usually go for the former score. Anime that are so bad that they are good, such as Skelter Heaven and Mars of Destruction, will be scored poorly nevertheless.
10-The anime is truly a masterpiece. It may have its flaws, but it made me feel something particularly special that sets it apart from most anime, whether there be particularly heart-wrenching sadness, comedy that made me truly laugh out loud, or simply an anime that got me engrossed from beginning to end. These anime will have been intelligently crafted, are very complex in many different ways, and will usually have excellence in multiple areas such as sound, art, etc. Anime that are scored 10 will always remain special. An example of this is Cowboy Bebop.
9-The anime overall is an excellent one that really entertained me. The anime usually has potential to be higher, but had a flaw or flaws that prevented it from reaching 10. This may be excessive fillers that don't add anything, for example. However the anime may simply be lacking in the depth of writing that could have allowed it to get a 10. An example of this is Psycho-Pass.
8-The anime was overall very interesting and entertaining. It is well written, but might have needed a bit more to get a higher score. There may have been a feature that pulled the score down rather than a lack in complexity, for example. An example of this is Mob Psycho 100.
7-The anime was a good one that I enjoyed watching. It was interesting and while it might not have been one worthy of binge-watching, it was still a good show. However it had a feature that made it not quite up to the standard of higher rated anime, and may have needed more complex writing, more complex/interesting characters, etc. An example of this is Akame ga Kill.
6-I was more positively inclined towards the anime that negatively. It was pretty good, but needed quite a bit more to make it better. It also may have started off very well with a niche concept, but declined towards the end. Shingeki no Kyojin is an example of this.
5-I didn't feel that the anime had positives that significantly outweighed the negatives. Anime that are rated 5 and below are lacking in character development , and they may have started off well, but became quite boring and lackluster towards the end. Log Horizon exemplifies this well.
4-The show was boring and/or fairly badly written. It also may have had some alright features, but overall it was not very good. The characters were often one-dimensional. Violence may cross my mind, but nothing more. Mushibugyou is an example.
3-The show was simply bad. It was poorly written and failed to captivate me at all, and was quite difficult to finish if it was particularly lengthy. The characters were boring/cliche, and the storyline was lacking originality. Watching this, I'm often considering what weapon to inflict bodily harm upon myself. Inuyasha (1st season) shows this.
2-The show was laughably bad, and was extremely flawed in multiple, if not most areas. It was unenjoyable and a total waste of time. There was a bad storyline and/or concept, and it was not well pulled off at all. Gyo was an example.
1-The show was either a complete waste of time, or I watched it because it was so notoriously bad. The animation, art, characters and storyline were so abysmal and effortless that it was laughable. It is only appropriate to have Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven as an example, as it is the lowest rated anime of all time with a current rating of 1.95/10.
