【How I rate】
10 -Crème de la crème
An outstanding experience. Everything about it was -at least- very good. An irreplaceable rare pearl of this medium, with nearly non-existing flaws within. Presented, executed and explored to its fullest potential, being the closest to the definition of the word "perfect" and "masterpiece" for me, even though it's impossible for something to reach such a state. Enjoyed every single bit of it, without moments of even the slightest feeling of being bored.
"Must watch/read" recommended.
9 -Superb
Nearly perfect. Rich in content. Minor flaws have been overshadowed and become null. I probably had some very insignificant problems with it, and maybe that's why it's not ranked higher. But still, top-tier quality in every aspect. A title that went beyond its limits and is sometimes even somewhat of a masterpiece, in its respective genre. Enjoyable from the beginning to the very end.
Greatly recommended
8 - Great
That star student who struggles in one class. From this point forward, is where I really liked what I have watched/read. Usually, an 8/10 title had some small flaws I couldn't overlook, but it still fulfills almost all of my expectations nonetheless. Not as rare as higher-ranked titles, yet still unique and solid. There are some rare occasions where I give this score to titles that are highly appreciated, but they still can't be considered an all-time favorite, even if they don't have any visible issue to the point where it bothers me. In the end, it was a delightful title that I genuinely adored, even though it's not the best I've ever watched/read. This is the kind of anime/manga I would like to come across more often.
Highly recommended
7 - Entertaining
Rainy day entertainment. An enjoyable title with little to complain about, usually solid in everything it tried to achieve. Some titles in this category are closer to a 6, and some other ones are closer to an 8. The reason why I didn't give a 6 is because I was pretty satisfied, and the reason why I didn't give an 8 is because it didn't have anything "wow" in order to push it to the next level and make it more remarkable. Maybe a little irregular, but something I can still call good, despite not making me fanboy over it. Overall, it was definitely a nice and enjoyable experience, but nothing more than that.
Recommended
6 - Likeable
It's good at doing what it's supposed to and provides consistent entertainment, but I had a couple of problems with it and it just failed in going that one step forward to become memorable. It was fine to begin with, and it could have been ranked higher, but due to weak execution, or being forgettable for the most part, felt flat and burnt itself. More pros than cons in general, but still nothing too significant. Overall, a decent experience that managed to capture my attention, but I'll probably forget about it after a few weeks.
Worth giving a try
5 - Passable
Just a time-killer. Very mediocre experience and it didn't really attract my attention. It's far from being good, but it's not exactly bad either. It probably had some good or interesting elements (e.g. animation/art, music, or some likeable characters) which makes it at least satisfactory, despite its disadvantages (at least for some titles). It could be enjoyable for some reason, but still, it didn't bring much to the table in order to delve more into it. If I didn't drop it, it's because I either liked it a bit more than I usually like a 5/10 title, or I was too bored and I just wanted to occupy myself with something. A fitting name for this category would be "the lowest passing grade"
Maybe recommended(?)
4 - Disappointing
Maybe, there is still something here. Maybe there is still something good, but it exists purely in the "potential' stages. Overall, a mediocre experience that is close enough to be considered a bad one. I can probably find some elements I like in it, but mostly it's a below-average show that I can't enjoy to the point where I won't drop it. Not quite a disaster...more like a minor car accident. Unpleasant, but not harmful. Poorly executed story and characters. Some "small and decent" things may have kept it from being even worse. Not that I hate it, but I definitely don't like it. Most titles in this category are dropped, but as before, there are some exceptions for various reasons.
Not recommended
1-3 - Repulsive
Well, I don't think I have to go into much detail in this category. Let's start by saying that sometimes, it's a very indifferent and boring experience, but most of the time it's just a bad experience. Titles that I couldn't care less about and had no positive effect on me whatsoever. It doesn't even seem to try to be the least decent. Nothing noteworthy here. I don't necessarily dislike or even hate all the titles in this category, and some of them could have been ranked a bit higher, but they didn't manage to become attractive/enjoyable enough to go to the next level, and in the end, it was mostly a "cringy" experience to say the least. Titles that I haven't dropped from this category "must" have a very specific and decent reason in order to keep watching/reading them, which tbh most of the times it will be either too meme to drop, or I'm just bored and I have nothing else to watch/read instead. There are also titles that I don't drop because I want to see how it will end, hoping that in the end it won't be as bad as I expect.
If you still want even a small explanation for each individual score from this category, consider this as an answer:
3 --> Pretty bad. May cause health issues
2 --> Very bad. May lead you to suicide
1 --> So bad, I feel offended for its existence. I don't want to remember it
Definitely not recommended.
Unrated
Titles that are unrated usually fall into at least one of these 3 categories:
1) I haven't decided yet on the score. Maybe I will, maybe I won't
2) It's been a while since I last occupied myself with the specific title, so I can't give it a thoughtful score
3) It's too insignificant to rate, so I don't really care. This goes for:
-random spin-offs
-something with a small number of episodes or small duration, and when it comes to manga, it usually goes for one-shots or something relatively small
-something which isn't your typical anime/manga in a way, which makes it "harder" to rate, because I have to rate it with a very different mindset that I usually rate my anime/manga
Keep in mind that my ratings are purely subjective. The most important factors for me is personal enjoyment, and how I felt while I was watching/reading any title. I do consider the story/plot/setting/pacing, and the characters very important factors as well, but they won't make any big difference if I already really like or dislike something. Animation/Art style and music are secondary factors that I do pay attention to, but I will rarely count on them in order to give my final score on a title.
In general, I don't spend too much time thinking about my scores tbh, and sometimes I may do some changes. Also, my scores are just an approximation of how I feel about a title and nothing more. I don't believe that a single number is enough to express my feelings and thoughts about any anime or manga. At least that's the case for like 90-95% of the time.
Usually, I try to stay away from something I might give less than 5 based on my first impressions and the public's opinion on them. But I may watch/read such titles anyway out of curiosity (and regret doing so later). I usually enjoy most of what I watch/read to a certain point. I also try to avoid being nitpicky because not only it is pointless almost every time, but it also ruins my fun and makes me exhausted trying to find something good or bad about a show, just so I can justify my opinion on it. A single "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" is more than enough. At the end of the day, don't forget that we are talking about Japanese cartoons and comics
This doesn't apply 100% to everything, but it should give people some idea on why I rated a show the way I did. I also don't really pay much attention to scores and reviews, because at the end of the day, a number or a review can't tell me if i will like or dislike something. In other words, someone else's opinion doesn't really affect me, but I'm am always happy to hear out good reasons on why I should or shouldn't watch/read any anime/manga. I believe that the best way to judge something is to sit down and start watching/reading it. If you like it, then keep going with it, If not, just drop it or at least finish it if you think that you have to for some reason.
Also, note that anything given 9 or 10 can be considered a favorite, but I prefer to keep as favorites on my profile only the very few ones that I consider to be truly impactful for me, and I still haven't lost my hype no matter how many years ago I watched/read them. Sometimes, this also applies to big franchises (e.g. One Piece) that a single anime/manga on my favorites from that franchise cannot really show/justify my feelings about it.
