Over the years, I've been known by many names, but they can be summed up with Guru Buckaroo Mu (as in 無 in the Buddhist meaning).
I am a relic of another generation - Generation X, lost between the greed and condescension of the Boomers and the nihilism and never-ending toxicity directed toward the Millennials. We aren't the silent generation; we're the invisible one. We were forced to be self-sufficient by the time we started grade school. We tried to keep up the revolution the hippies started, but got lost and forgotten by parents trying to keep the status quo. We fought battles to improve the world, but nobody paid attention because we weren't sensational. We saw what was coming, and mostly decided to do what we could from the shadows.
We grew up on the earliest fringes of Anime culture available to Americans - Speed Racer (better known as Mach GoGoGo), Battle of the Planets (Science Ninja Team Gatchaman), and tokusatsu imports like Ultraman (1966) and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot (Giant Robo). We traded well-worn VHS copies (uphill both ways) whenever they were available, which was never often enough. Some of us grew up and were able to make sure our kids could have easier access to the content we loved. But mostly, we stay quiet - because we're happy being forgotten. We're used to it, and it keeps us out of the crosshairs.
I don't watch a lot of "current season" shows. I grew up waiting a week between episodes - and that just won't fly anymore. Also helps to keep me from wasting time on a series that goes to shit after 3 episodes. So at the end of a season, or maybe later, I'll go back and binge what I want to see in a weekend (or for really good shows, overnight). Makes my list seem a little odd, and even I'm starting to wonder if I'll live long enough to clear out my backlog.
