My interest in Japanese goes back much farther than that. Originally, it was a personal challenge: the hardest useful language I had heard of, with a whole different writing system to boot. Many years later my daughter got interested in anime, but in the end it was my interest in the language that led me to manga, anime and so forth, not the usual other way around. The fact that I am translating now is my way of taking my language abilities up to the next level. Diving into the deep end of the pool to improve my swimming, so to speak.
Trilingual, in my case. I am far more functional in Spanish than I am in Japanese. Raised speaking English, married speaking Spanish, obsessively studying Japanese...
Also, you will find that there is more "forum" activity with this series over at AnimeSuki, Baka-Tsuki and Manga-Fox. For some reason there simply isn't much activity here.
Apart from the light novel series, I find myself trying to help the manga scanlation along as well. Related to that, I have found myself being the main translator for the manga Evergreen, also by Takemiya. In both cases, somebody else was translating and got distracted by other things (twenty-somethings, so easily diverted...).
