Also, Demon King Rance is a total badass, and his design is awesome. It might just be my natural inclination to edgy things, but it really grew on me.
So either Shirou has a massive power spike or Archer is a complete idiot. The both are really bad writing, so it doesn't really change my opinion on it. And yeah, I know Shirou supposedly gets the boost to his training from seeing Archer but a) it's completely nonsensical, b) even with that it's only a couple of days! Basically they have to make all these hack excuses for why Shirou suddenly is OP, but all is does is to make the resolution feel cheap to me. Good writing is supposed to make the MC feel like they deserve the power because of their effort, but all I can think of is that Gilgamesh totally got robbed because Shirou used hacks. So yeah, you can't erase bad writing just because you say it was caused by some magical mumbo jumbo, because it doesn't feel deserved. You mention plot armor and yes, that is another sign of bad writing.
I can't wait to see those scenes animated by Ufotable. Speaking of HF, Sakura is another character I disliked because she was such a doormat. I hope her transformation will fix that and she doesn't need Shirou to rescue her from the evil bugs but... Oh, who am I kidding that's totally going to happen, isn't it? It's some white knight's wet dream after all... (This is actually pure speculation - I haven't spoiled myself enough to know.)
Thanks, I'll take a look at those.
I actually never found the right choices hard to see... If you think what an idiot like Shirou would do in each situation, it's pretty easy. I just never wanted to pick them because they were so dumb. Anyway, to be honest, I don't really care what Nasu's motive was writing him, just that he's horribly written.
As for the battles in UBW... Breaking his spirit makes no sense, since he can't become Archer anyway, as long as he just kills him. Even if Archer's wish of him being erased could become true by killing this Shirou, then just do it! But if this Shirou is not the Shirou that became him and therefore can't erase his existence... then no matter what you say or how you break him, you still aren't going to change anything because you're talking to the wrong guy. Even if Archer indeed was trying to break him, all you would get is a giant plot hole.
Besides, the servants were pretty much described as half-GODS at the beginning (or their fighting skills were). There is no way you can just casually become that strong in a couple of days. Or are you saying Shirou Emiya, some kid that doesn't even compete in kendo is a demi-god now just because somebody beat him up a couple of times within less than a week? I have never ever seen such a power creep in such a short amount of time, and I'm counting anime in this too! As for Gil not taking him seriously... yeah that was him at the beginning, but the problem with such immediate action as fighting is that you can start trying the second you want to. Besides... Gil was right. He should have beaten Shirou even without trying. HE IS A LITERAL DEMIGOD! Shirou trained for like a couple of days and half of even those were spent taking it easy because of his injuries! Gil should be able to beat him with blindfolded! It makes no sense! This writing is soooooooo bad!
I'll marathon the movies once they're all out, but I don't plan on returning to the VN. No matter how amazing the conclusion might be, it can't make up for all the hair I'm going to pull from my head while getting there. And seeing it's Nasu, I'm seriously doubting whether I'll even like it at all.
I'm going to announce the superiority of Fate/Zero loud and clear. Their salty tears will be delicious. F/SN sucks. We already went through how bad its writing was. Idk Fata Morgana but Kara no Shoujo is pretty good. Seems like you understand what I appreciate, so I guess I'll check it out. As for Steins;Gate, I haven't played the game but I've seen the anime. Sci-fi plot was interesting, but the only character I liked at all was Kurisu. I like logical people, not chuunibyous and the rest of the supporting cast were one-note gimmicks. I also watched the first episode of Chaos;Child (multiple times even!), but it was atrocious and trying way too hard to be edgy. I hear the adaption was bad, but it doesn't exactly make me interested to learn more.
Another thing I forgot... I also like Carnival Phantasm, so I guess I like two Fate series then. Cheers!
Basically my problem with F/SN is mainly just with Shirou. The rest is rather forgettable shounen trash, but nothing I'm too upset about. However, since Shirou is the MC, he ruins all the scenes he's in for me... I swear every time he tells Saber to get back to the kitchen because only men are allowed to fight in Fate route I pop a vein. Gee, so you're saying that you're stronger than Saber, eh? Oh and speaking of how big of a jerk he is to women, what was up with that sex scene with Rin in the UBW? She said it hurt, how about slowing down, you ass? IRL you'd ruin your relationship like that but it's barely even addressed in the VN.
Besides, Shirou is a total author-insert mary sue with no flaws. Nasu dares to claim his weakness is... that he's too heroic? I'm having hard time buying that when the game literally kills you if you don't make the same stupid and illogical choices as he does + if you don't, you get into Taiga's dojo for her to hammer into your head that being unheroic is bad. Even narratively there are no consequences whatsoever because no matter how bad he's beaten he's always totally alright the day after. So basically the story is saying that he's too heroic, except actually he's always 100% right in the end and the game is gonna kill you if you don't agree. Such a great flawed character he is.
And oh god, the insane power inflation Shirou goes through... You expect me to believe that the same guy that got completely creamed by Lancer at the beginning can a few days later just casually beat both Archer and Gilgamesh (in UBW)? If that's not bad writing, I don't know what is.
As for Heaven's Feel... I admit I haven't read it all. The beginning was just so bad I ragequit. All I remember is Shirou's ridiculous wet dream at the beginning. Not exactly masterpiece material lol. But can you really blame me after how much I hated the other routes lol? Before you ask, I do know about Sakura though.
The only Fate iteration I have actually enjoyed was Fate/Zero. Gen Urobuchi is a good writer. Unlike certain someone.
As for G-Senjou no Maou... I mean of course the final plot twist about Maou's identity was silly, but at least it was nowhere near as ridiculous as pretty much everything that happened in FSN.
Also, I think it's party system is one of the worst I've ever seen. It feels like Love Live or Fate/Grand Order, which is HORRIBLE for a full-priced game.
Hell, those games I previously mentioned are even better, JUST BECAUSE THEY'RE FREE!
And the most disappointing part was how, based on what I could read, Rance didn't marry Sill in the ending, and dedicates himself to her. I feel like that kinda just reverses what I thought the series was leading up to. I wanted Rance to do what Akuji or Rouga do in their endings, where the settle down with a single girl.
X has further proved to me, and my bf as well, that the Dai Series is AliceSoft's best series.
I haven't played DRV3 yet, but I am DYING to play it. Just like you however, I don't really have time for VNs outside of some breaks, but as soon as I have another break, I'm going to play it. I'm silently wishing for a Nintendo Switch port though, because whenever I play video games now, it's mostly on my Switch. The Switch is in dire need of some VNs.
But it's good to hear that you liked it! Nagito's character did add a lot to DR2, but I'm assuming Kodaka will find new ways to surprise me in DRV3. The opinions on the ending were mixed yeah, but hey, it can't be worse than DR3 anime's ending right lol.
I'll let you know once I'll start reading DRV3. I'm so looking forward to it! But dat price though...
If you ever need an anime to get back into the anime world again and you have Netflix, then Devilman Crybaby is the perfect binge watch, man. It deals with very mature themes and characters that have very real problems, which is not something I see in modern anime very often anymore. It's one hell of a fucking ride. It's crazy how a story orignally from the 70s is still so relevant in 2018.
How have you been? Have you played DRV3 yet?
