Yo. I'm Justin, I'm mostly known as Nanoodles but I have the curse of an old username on here so Globinable works too.
I hit 1 year of watching anime on August 27th, 2015, and reached 100 completed anime after watching "Non Non Biyori: Repeat" on September 21st, 2015. On October 25th, 2015 it rained, and Arawi Keiichi announced that Nichijou was ending. And then six years later, like Jesus Christ rising from the grave, it came back in 2021.
My favorite shows usually tend to focus on more lighthearted genres such as comedy, romance, and slice of life, but I'm no stranger to more action or drama oriented series.
I primarily enjoy reading manga as opposed to anime, although I keep up with a number of shows each season. This is how I keep my music list fresh by ripping the audio from OP's and ED's from youtube and allowing them to primarily dominate my musical playlist.
It's pretty difficult for me to choose a top 5 series, but here would be my best choices at the moment.
1) Nichijou. I love this primarily because of the anime, but it's probably my favorite and also the source of my current username. Crazy, over-the-top,
slapstick comedy. Incredibly adorable characters (
Nano Shinonome...),
and I mean like crazy cute The comedy is not for everyone, but I love it to death. This is an absolutely fantastic series that I would recommend anyone to give a try. If you end up liking it, it's
bound to provide a lot of laughter.
1) My Monster Secret. Honestly this one is also tied for first. The humor in this tends to be a little less outlandish than Nichijou so I think it lands a bit more consistently. That said, the jokes are equally insane in other ways. This entire series does a fantastic job of making you care about the characters. You'll laugh when they laugh, cry when they cry, and also sometimes laugh when they cry because of the absurd situation they have found themselves in. The romance is also a highlight of the series--it is exceedingly rare nowadays for series to continue after the main couple gets together, but this one continues along and then some. This series is so full of heart that I cannot recommend it enough.
3) Mushoku Tensei. A controversial favorite of many, this is an incredible undertaking of the isekai genre. The world building is stellar, the magic and power scaling are believable (Rudeus is strong, but not an almighty MC), and every time the story reaches a turning point you get chills. The animation for the show is beautiful too. The second season slows down a bit (the infamous ED arc), but even then its exploration of Rudy's character and depression is pretty good. If you can pretend the weird stuff isn't there, this series is a masterpiece.
4) 3-Gatsu no Lion. This show is made by Shaft, so the animation is basically as close as anime comes to belonging in a museum. The series dives deeply into the topic of depression, and I found myself relating to and rooting for Rei, the main character. The three sisters he meets (Momo, Hina, and Akari) are a fantastic contrast to Rei with their warmth and kindness, and watching Rei grow and overcome his depression over the course of the show due to the people he meets is incredibly touching.
5) Bocchi the Rock! This show follows Hitori Gotoh (aka Bocchi), a socially anxious girl who wants to be in a band so she can be popular. It primarily focuses on her overcoming her social anxiety, and the often exaggerated reactions as she endeavors to do so. For anyone who is also socially anxious, you will likely relate strongly to Bocchi (although maybe not quite as strongly as her lol) and find yourself constantly laughing at her antics.
5) Fruits Basket. Yeah, I'm cheating and putting Fruits Basket here. Because it is Just. That. Good. One of the original drama/romance shoujo series. The characters are done extremely well and are much deeper than they may originally seem, and the mystery and story make it interesting to follow beyond that. On top of that, the remake is absolutely beautiful. I strongly suggest watching this.
While not in my top 5, I do want to give a quick shout out to Barakamon. I finally finished the manga for this in summer of 2022, but both the anime and manga for this are great. Handa-Sensei and Naru present an funny and heartwarming combination, and the way they transform the other's life for the better will leave you a different person.
Honorable mentions to other amazing series like Witch Hat Atelier, Wotakoi, Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann, The Apothecary Diaries, Natsume Yuujinchou, and Spy x Family.
Anyways, not sure why you're reading this when you can just look at my list, but whatever. If you actually read it, congrats. You wasted a few minutes of your precious life. Minutes that probably could've been spent watching any of the above anime. For shame.
