It is hard to even quantify the level of success Drake has reached since his debut.
However, in the last two years, he's faced a lot of criticism for the music he has been putting out. Personally, I believe the criticism is unwarranted.
In September of 2021, after months of delays, Drake released his HIGHLY anticipated album "Certified Lover Boy". It was met with a lot of criticism. Regardless of it breaking the streaming record on Spotify on its day of release. Many people were displeased with the album. On first listen, I must admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the album. However, it has aged like fine wine. In the first week or so there were only really a couple of songs I enjoyed, mainly tracks like "Champagne Poetry" and "No Friends in the Industry". In fact, I believe that "Champagne Poetry" is Drake's deepest, realest, and most personal song to date. It's a beautiful track and a perfect opener for this album. I'll definitely be writing about this track later on. The more I listened to CLB the more I grew to love it. It definitely isn't Drizzy's best, but nonetheless and good album. It's just kind of fun and lighthearted with a bunch of banger songs on it. it's hard to dislike an album like that. Certified Lover Boy is a good album and it had some dope rollout and merchandise that came with it. The cover was garbage though.
After the release of the album, for the remainder of the year, Drake went on an amazing feature run. Almost every song he was featured on post-release was a hit.
To the surprise of many, in the middle of June 2022, Drake announced an album and released it that night. The album, titled "Honestly, Nevermind", was expected to be another classic Drake album. The album was anything but. It was a full house/dance-inspired album with really only one track with Drake rapping on it, "Jimmy Cooks" feat. 21 Savage, the last song on the album. It was a shock to Drake fans everywhere and really anyone who listened. It was faced with EXTREME backlash with almost everyone calling it trash right off the bat. Usually, when a fanbase grows up with an artist and has a love and nostalgia towards their old music, anything new or different the artist may do usually angers its fan base, because it is not what they wanted/expected, however, that doesn't necessarily make the piece of work bad. Drake completely changed his sound, style, and flow on this album, AND it was a surprise drop. Which was done purposefully given the nature of the album. From beginning to end, I think this album is masterful in what it attempted to accomplish. Drawing heavy inspiration from KAYTRANADA style house music, the melodies used mixed with the dance elements on each track is amazing. The way Drake utilized his voice and changed his sound per each track creates almost a euphoric space when listened to. To be fair I'm a big House fan and have bias, but I still think Drake's producer 40 mastered using the simplistic dance beat mixed with melodic samples and vocals. I genuinely enjoy every track on this album and listen to it almost every day. Drake even addressed the backlash the album received saying "It's all good if you don't get it yet, It's all good, it's what we do, We wait for you to catch up...". He was right, they were ahead of the game. The more people listened, the more they realized how good the album is. Although, many stick to their opinion of it being bad.
After the release of "Honestly, Nevermind", Drake was pretty quiet. Besides a couple of rumors that more music was coming nothing else was heard out of the artist.
Until October 22nd. Drake releases a music video for "Jimmy Cooks" featuring 21 Savage. Mind you, this is 2 days after a rumor circled the internet saying they were dropping a joint album, but those rumors were shut down by 21 himself. The video starts normally with drake rapping his verse but the song cuts out in the middle of Drake's verse on the track and an angelic-sounding snippet plays, and an announcement of a joint album entitled "Her Loss" dropping October 28th. Middle of that week, Drake revealed his producer got Covid so they pushed the release to November 4th, tomorrow. The snippet of the new track that plays has been living rent-free in my head since the video came out. The melody is nothing short of magnificent, and if the album sounds anything like it, I have high hopes for what's to come. OVO 40 was really on his shit when making this beat. It feels ethereal, a cry for help and yet a warmth in solace. Maybe I'm looking into it too much, but the 1:30 minute-long snippet really tugged at my heartstrings, the type of music that transcends your soul. Although it isn't the full song, and I'm very excited to hear the full song tonight, It's a piece of composed music that I love and haven't been able to stop listening to. I think a lot of people are in that boat with me given there are already countless edits of the snippet on YouTube and Soundcloud. What a great segway into the album from "Honestly, Nevermind" as well, having "Jimmy Cooks" as the final song, almost hinting towards "Her Loss". The rollout for this album has been hilarious as well, with countless fake interviews and fake promos of Drake and 21 clowning the music industry. Given every track the duo has been on have been fire, I have high expectations for tonight.
As a Drake fan, I can't help but be happy for all the music he's given us in a matter of 14 months.
I guess you could say Drake was a CERTIFIED LOVER BOY but HONESTLY, NEVERMIND. It's HER LOSS.
Drizzy dropped a trilogy right in front of our eyes and no one saw it coming.
