By 1997 Gundam I think you're talking about Gundam Wing? Just need some clarification cause it can get quite confusing real fast.
Quite honestly, I don't feel you HAVE to watch anything from the Universal Timeline to get into Gundam's best parts. Like I started with Gundam IBO which got me into the franchise back in 2015. I generally handle things by release order, but in this case around I watched in chronological order by timeline. So I just ended up going through all of the Universal Century, Original Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) ---> Zeta Gundam (Best one TBH in this timeline) ---> Double Zeta --->Char's Counterattack ---> MSG-Unicorn ---> Victory Gundam (Depressing as shit, regret, honestly I tell people to stay away from it) ---> Turn A Gundam (Pretty unique one, least battle intensive and felt more like a cold war for the most part)
Theres a bunch of OVA's and Movies / Short stories in between as well if you're interested, but not too important or quite liked
========= Everything else is part of it's own universe so you can just out right watch it.
If you really like Gundam Wing, I recommend IBO, they're quite similar. At some point we're getting a movie for the Post Calamity Timeline.
Otherwise, my personal favorite was Gundam 00, quite short, only 50 eps, felt amazing the entire way, from the Gundam/character designs, to the political power struggles, the fucking music. Also felt like the odds were always hella stacked against the main characters later on.
Gundam Seed takes a bit to heat up, but gets quite good too. Though power scaling in this one is actually broken lmao. People call the main character Jesus Kira Yamato.
Last two arcs of Duel Monsters kind of dragged too long.
Other than that if you do go farther, I don't think you'll like GX too much, it gets better in the last two arcs but you're probably better off reading the manga instead cause people who read the manga pretend like the anime don't exist lmao.
It is! I really enjoyed watching Grander Musashi, I've watched it in Cantonese, subbed by Pierrot. I'm not sure if I still have the episodes on my HD though...
From what I can remember, I especially like the friendship and adventure elements in the series. It's also an old-school anime, so you have to be okay with that old style. (I've always been a fan of the 80's/90's style art and animation, probably because I grew up with it).
I like King Golf quite a bit. Golf is one of my favourite sports and it is one of the only golf manga I have seen translated. It's a pretty standard sport manga but all the characters were pretty likable and the comedy was great.
between OAV, music videos, films and specials I watched around the 70% of the 2000 animes, if compare with another young people, is not too much.... About drop a series, usually, when an anime series dislike, stop it to watch, and I leave it on pause, one or two or 6 months later continues watching it....because life changes as it can change the way I watched it, but it rarely improves, on the contrary, it ends up getting worse, but there are exceptions! kekeke
Nice to meet you Gexis!!

Also, how was watching the standalone Gundam timelines? I take you watched a few of them.

If you need a guide, I loosely followed along this one, it is outdated now though.
