Welcome Commonly referred to as Gen for short. A long time Video Game, Comic Book, and Anime enthusiast. About Friend Requests: I'd prefer to only add people who I've had a conversation with before or are at least willing start one. If you send me a request and we've never even talked then chances are I'll probably end up denying the request. Either attach a message to your request or just leave a comment on my profile. I'm always open for a conversation so feel free to start. About Me Me and Anime: I've been watching Anime for as long as I can remember and grew up watching the usual mainstream Anime that aired on television back in the day along with the classic Ghibli films. While I wasn't always familiar with the term 'Anime', I was however, always somehow aware of their Japanese origins due to how different they felt in comparison to the other cartoons I watched. Around the age of 9 is when I started started seeking anime outside the confines of my television, the earliest shows that come to mind are Guyver, Rurouni Kenshin, Naruto, Soul Eater and Death Note. I also highly enjoy writing reviews and write mostly for fun or whenever I feel like it. I also read a bit of Manga sometimes but unless its already obvious from my statistics, I watch Anime far more than I read Manga. Other than the very few comprehensive reviews, I also provide short reviews for all of the titles on my list through the tags section. I try to make these as short and to-the-point as I can for quick referencing and serves more as a medium for me to get my thoughts out. How I Rate My Anime: Having watched anime very consistently for over a decade, It's hard to not notice the underlying flaws and cliched troupes that have settled in most anime, making it harder to come across a show that truly stands out to me. I'm very thorough with my rating process and consider every aspect before rating a title, and try to be as objective as I possibly can while still giving in a flavor of my own thoughts as well. I don't have a set criteria and instead review based on what the show itself tries to focus on and brings to the table so my rating criteria shifts depending on what I'm watching. Having said that though, my thought process does revolve around the saying that "A well written cast of characters can compensate for a poorly written plot but very rarely is a well written plot able to compensate for poorly written characters". Because of all this, my ratings might come off as unfair to some, but just because a show is ranked a little lower than usual doesn't mean I hate it, similarly if a title is rated highly on my list doesn't make it a favorite either. The objective here is NOT to undermine any shows in particular, but rather to utilize the entire ranking scale to provide a wider spectrum and ultimately distinguish between the good, the great, and the exceptional. A more comprehensive explanation for each rank can be found below. My Ranking Scale
10/10: (eg: Monster) Exceeds all limits in every aspect. These shows not only managed to entertain from start to end, but also left me speechless towards how well the show was written and carried out. Memorable characters to mind-blowing stories, these shows not only did it all right but took it on a whole new level. These titles felt like a journey and left me with a void on completion. These are not perfect titles, as such a thing does not exist. Rather these are shows that manage to take everything it sets up for itself and carries it through till the end in the absolute best way possible while eventully going beyond what you might initially expect of them. 9/10: (eg: The End of Evangelion, Mushishi, Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal) Shows that left me absolutely amazed. The most well executed titles out there and truly some of the best shows altogether. These go further beyond the standards of most titles. Had me entertained and wanting more during their entirety and were truly engaging. Delivers extremely well in every aspect. Any minor flaws are easily overshadowed by the show's overall presentation. Showcase gripping stories and fleshed out concepts that manage to instill strong emotions within the viewer. They're a form of art and are easily some of my most adored shows. 8/10: (eg: Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Death Note) These shows go beyond just simple entertainment. They manage to leave a strong and lasting impact and are highly entertaining altogether. Exceptional in every aspect. The amount of flaws it had was very little compared to all that it did right. Easily memorable and very well presented pieces of work. The main thing that sets these apart is that you don't come to these for simple entertainment, but rather an experience. Houses some of my personal favorites. 7/10: (eg: Cowboy Bebop, Little Witch Academia, Toradora!) A great well-rounded show, one that does every aspect right. These basically serve as an example of what a solid title is and how any show should be carried out. These are the titles that gave out a good amount of enjoyment and left me with an overall positive impression by the end. Had a good amount of memorable moments and whatever setup it presented, it managed to carry it out till the end in a satisfying way. Had a few flaws that hold it back from achieving a higher score but still very easily recommendable and manage to easily stand out from the rest. Truly some of the most fun shows I've watched. 6/10: (eg: Boku dake ga Inai Machi, Violet Evergarden, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso) A cut above the average run-of-the-mill titles, these are generally good shows that left something to be desired. Fairly good in most aspects but had their problems as well. These shows offer some good moments and do well enough to stand out from the usual bunch. This might also include shows which might've had a good concept and presented it well enough but didn't manage to provide some closure or failed to deliver by the end. These do well when you're looking for a quality show while not caring too deeply about the writing and plot as a whole. 5/10: (eg: Another, Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, Angel Beats!) Most typical or mediocre shows fall under this rating, plagued with anime cliches. Shows that offer nothing new to the plate or even shows that may have had something new going for them but do nothing to work towards it, a 'wasted potential'. Shows with very common setups or stereotypical character or those that may have had some noteworthy moments but nothing to truly impress. While they manage to do well in certain areas, at the same time they’re lacking in others. They're not necessarily bad, but not anything praiseworthy either. Provides just enough to be worth watching. 4/10: (eg: Akame ga Kill!, Tokyo Ghoul, Darling in the FranXX) Very effortless shows with comparatively more flaws than pros. These shows were below average standards in almost every way. Sometimes had a few good qualities but the abundance of flaws hold it back from ranking higher. Left me with an overall bad impression. Might’ve had some potential within an interesting concept/setting but either paid no attention to it and wasted time presenting meaningless scenarios or could’ve failed to properly present its idea and crushed under the weight of its own setting. 3/10: (eg: Goblin Slayer, Overlord, Mirai Nikki) There's almost nothing redeemable. They are mostly shows which were either put together with no effort or didn't do well to utilize what they had at hand. Might have managed to set something up for itself but never managed to work towards it, a show left with an empty plot and no considerable development or something that's just uneventful altogether. Either that or employing cheap writing techniques to make the show seem eventful (Shock value, Excessive gore/nudity, Baseless plot twists etc.) in order to make up for its poor writing. Very poorly handled shows with very low value. Something I would personally never recommend. 2/10: (eg: Pupa, Glasslip, Blade & Soul) Extremely poorly written shows. They don't provide you with anything to talk about. There's no plot or story but rather just random ideas clustered together. Something that’s been put together with no planning whatsoever and feels like more of a chore to go through. Very pointless and a waste of time. Lots of short and pointless animations could also fall under this category. 1/10: (eg: Vampire Holmes, Tenkuu Danzai Skelter+Heaven, Mars of Destruction) A title that might as well make you question its very existence. It's hard to imagine somebody producing something this bad without deliberately aiming for it to turn out this way. The only reason you'd watch them is to seek amusement out of the fact that they're so bad. I'd say for exchanging experience and opinions on various shows as well, but it seems that is not the case at all times... I understand the shock of someone hating a story you adore, but it's still a matter of taste in the long run. Would say not to pay much mind to such things, disrespect shouldn't be given time of day.
The suggestion is always there, I will make sure to contact soon! ^:^
Life has not been kind on my part lately so definitely no reason to worry ^^
Indeed, but I seldom get to lead such conversations if I am at disagreement with someone since the person sees it as an attack or something, egos at play I would say... so is a shame really
And here I read pieces like Boku no Hero Academia adn Bleach which delivered with both the manga and anime adaptations, but also Owari no Seraph and that anime really did...make a few wrong turns tbh
It's all alright, you're more than free to add me on discord if you please ^:^
It was a thing we did on the 1st session, read everyone's pieces and give out thoughts on whether the person liked it or not *fun thing to do tbh^^'
Well, I tend to overlook the rating system altogether~
It might be merely my bonkers ideology, but expressing your thoughts on it and giving out the picture that was created in your mind is what I find intriguing, kinda why I'm into writing so much and simply wish to find the best way to convey exactly how I feel
But then again the menings of all words are arbitrary, so no matter how much you try, you could bump into someone and stay completely baffled by what they came to think ~ it's a challenge and an adventure of the sort, so definitely wish to experience various ways and stiles of storytelling and writing in general ^.^
Which was your biggest disappointment though?
It literally just came to mind since the question is usually always which stories blew you away ^^'
That's when most of the concept I previously conjured changed, because my goal was exactly as you say, be objective even when I'm not having my cup of tea, while during the sessions it was all about how my own attitude and character are missing in the sentences.
I believe there actually was a reaction "of course it's about you, it's your piece lay it all out!", but don't quote me on that one, it was a year ago and I'm translating so might lose part of the actual message in the process ~
I still have to read a piece (or all) you wrote and very much look forward to it, but in essence I guess is that even though objective, I started dropping in short comments at the endings of my sentences or by using certain phrases or expressions you could hear some sarcasm, irony or glorification where it's due *according to my own standards of course ^^'
Merely to express the attitude, but don't think I still have the proper balance, because I surely do not want my pieces to come across as conceited or narrow-minded, but also not really robotic and purely analytic
Couldn't help but get super curious after reading your rating standards if I may call it so
ever since I've undertaken a course in writing film criticism I've been in and out of thought about anything I read or watch, so I write bits and pieces quite often and I find your system to be quite concise and fair ^^
Although am curious if you completely exclude your opinion and enjoyment when deciding on how the piece turned out to be overall?
Well, LotGH is still what I consider a niche product, so most of the praise seems to come from an audience already predisposed to praise teh show.
This one was fairly stressful to write, and it came out quite length, as predicted.
