Started watching anime in 2020 as a 'more mature' person. Always thought that anime was for kids... then I watched Grave of the Fireflies. (Does one ever recover?!) Since then I've watched a wide range of anime in order to better understand what it is that I find enjoyable. Now learning how to be more picky.
For me, mandatories are: an engaging story, characters I can feel empathy for and a touch of magic... whatever that may look like.
Have found that its best to keep an open mind and a sense of humour, avoid reviews, avoid over-hyped anime.
Still acclimatising to reading manga, and being a 90's comicbook reader I prefer full colour... although great black and white illustration definitely has charm.
Currently trying to work thru my PTW list, but... SQUIRREL!! 😂
Favourite movie: Howl's Moving Castle
Favourite tv series: Fruits Basket
Favourite manga: Yubisaki to Renren
Favourite manhua: Tian Guan Ci Fu
Anime is addictive and Spirited Away was my gateway drug.

Damn... It does look like it's official art from some sort of game magazine from maybe the 2000? 2010?
Like I can imagine holding a copy of Dissidia FF, opening the manual, and seeing that picture.
Is that a compliment? aaaaaah, I dunno... uhm... Psst, it's a compliment!
I think the issue with the old fans is that they wanted the same game, meanwhile the Remake team wanted to experiment with it and make a game that to me, it almost felt like Yakuza in a way. Very ironic, considering that the only thing I know about the sequel is that it's also full of minigames. I know lots of people are mad about the pacing specifically, but to me, a slower pace has always been and felt better than a faster one; the fact that you get to breathe in and live in Midgar was quite the game changer for me.
I'm in the same boat, actually! I don't personally like the pancing of.... FF series as a whole, but I liked how in FF7:RE they took their time with their characters and fixed a lot of that early jrpg writing.
What do you think of the FF7 remake?
Tehehehe
That has the power to open up
Some very turbulent feelings -
May I try?
lol, it's called..
Appreciate you accepting the FR
but I did like the male characters as well..
Izumi train-boy :)
Yamagishi-Sensei.. lol
But not the creep..
No, it's fine :) I just asked because I thought that maybe you only encountered people who were fanatically obsessed with one "mission", whether it's only watching anime to reach a certain number or maybe only visiting the forums to prove a certain point etc., but never actually trying to engage in one-on-one conversations. I guess it's a bit of a weird interpretation of the word "mission" lol but it still makes sense in a broader sense.
I was like that too lol at first, I thought that maybe I should just wait for more Given anime, but then just decided to finish it.
I haven't seen any of the Chinese ones yet, but I'm pretty interested in finally getting to them someday :) as for epic adventures...I'm not sure if I know a BL manga or anime like that, but I do know a few visual novels. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres in media, so I wish more BL stories would experiment with it on a grander scale. But then again, it depends on how the thing is done, so I don't care about the genres as much as the particular piece of media.
Oh, that's interesting :) I had an acquaintance in the past who is asexual, but the only thing I knew is that people would ask her all the time when she'd marry, which she hated and complained to me about all the time lol because she didn't know how to explain to people that it doesn't interest her. In any case, I wouldn't really know how an asexual person would perceive smut in general :) I guess it depends on the person? Anyway, it looks like recommending short smut manga to you may not be a good idea lol I mean the manga that is mainly focused on sex rather than anything else, since it's the main attraction.
That's a long "I don't want" list! lol But it's fine :) I'm sure I could find a ton of things that I don't want to see either, but I just never bothered creating such a list. All in all, I'd say that I'm fine with most things, depending on how they're presented and with a few "buts" here and there. Doesn't mean that I'd actually enjoy most of it, but you know, there is really no "I'll definitely never watch/read that!" line for me :) for example, I have zero interest in tentacles or bestiality as well, but if there comes a time where I'd read things with that stuff, for whatever reason, then so be it, even if I hate it. It's just that I'd never go out of my way to purposefully experience things like that because there are so much more interesting and enjoyable things out there for me :) that's pretty much my mentality when it comes to entertainment, except for a fact that I also favor entire mediums like games, anime and manga over others, like live-action TV series, movies etc., which I prefer to ignore. Well, I guess it's just a long way of saying that we all have our hierarchy of preferences and would rather avoid certain things in favor of others :) I hate very few things on their own in general, but I can often hate particular things depending on how they're presented in a particular piece of media. Something like that.
I'd need to check out Taming the Tiger first :p but I guess it gives me a general idea of your BL taste range :)
In any case, I guess I can recommend you a few things :) as far as anime goes, I'd recommend giving Hoshiai no Sora a try (just a warning that it's not really a finished series and not really a BL either), but it seems like you've seen everything else BL-ish that is worth mentioning that I know of lol but manga has more options, I guess. Weeeelll, I'd obviously want to recommend Killing Stalking to more people, but they need to understand that they'll be reading a psychological thriller before going in and not a BL story :) there is also Shimanami Tasogare, which is not really a BL either, but it deals with all these themes more from a social commentary perspective. And there is also Blood Bank, but I think it's only worth recommending because it has vampires (I love vampires) and hot sex scenes lol I think that's pretty much it. Other stuff is either "smut-focused" or has some minor homoerotic content that is never focused on enough to matter in a grand scheme of things.
I also saw that you added Owari no Seraph manga to your PTR :p I'd recommend watching the anime first :) if you find it to be too trivial and won't fall in love with the whole thing as strongly as I did, then I don't think that the manga would be worth getting into. But up to you, of course :) it's not like you need to be in love with something to be interested in it more extensively.
In a way :p as someone who is obsessed with personal ratings and hierarchy, I kind of need to review some of my ratings, which requires me to re-experiences certain things, some of which have been waiting for their time for quite a few years. Mostly games, at the moment :) and that's what I'm doing when it comes to entertainment nowadays. I'll try to "inject" new experiences into my life here and there, but these days I'm mostly busy with revising my past, so to speak. Not much time is left for new anime or manga, unfortunately :)
What made you take a break from gaming? :) Just needed a change of pace?
Not much offline life these days lol but there are quite a few things to do online as well :) sometimes it includes writing unintentionally long responses on MAL lol
Do you mean a literal mission or in a metaphorical sense? :)
Hmmmm well, I wouldn't say that I have a lot of BL experiences when it comes to "proper" BL anime and manga. Yet. It's mostly smut and one-shots that aren't even on MAL lol I'm more interested in BL visual novels, and then again, it's just one of many interests that just happened to influence my life in a more profound way than other things :) I don't play/read them nearly as much as I would've if I only focused on BL. That said, have you tried reading Given fully or would you rather wait for the anime? :) If you like it enough, that is.
Anyway, I keep thinking about certain things and each time I recall something from my lists, I become unsure if that stuff qualifies as BL :p they may have gay characters or some themes, but they aren't outright BL, so I don't know if I should recommend them or not. Are you fine with that or would you prefer the "real" BL? :)
I'm currently not watching or reading anything, but I'll continue soon :) more focused on other things and gaming, so I'm kind of on a break from anime/manga, but I hope that my last updates will prove useful in the future :)
And sorry if my replies might take a long time these days :) I have MAL opened in my browser all the time, but since I'm currently not actively using it, it tends to blend in, and I sometimes just forget it exists lol
As for recommendations: if you want more pain in addition to Grave of the Fireflies, then maybe you should watch Hadashi no Gen :) the theme is pretty similar. I guess it's a bit of an evil recommendation lol I don't think that I'm actually all that good with giving recommendations, but maybe I can give some depending on what you'd want to watch/read :)
