Mahjong is very hard to learn. I got more of an understanding of the game by watching Akagi.
I often used some simple images in order to understand/recall some of the basics.
A good friend of mine also happened to list some mahjong rules/terms that he could remember.
Tsumo: Showing the line of tiles you have accomplished.
Ron: Calling out to another player after they've placed the only/main tile you need.
Ten Pai: Being one tile away from winning.
Riichi: Wedges extra points to the table, sort of like a penalty to both the player and the opponents in a way. Players are likely to use this tactic if they're confident in winning or have something in planned. Earns extra points upon victory Loses extra points upon defeat.
Han-chan: "A session where each player gets to be the head twice. The final game will be on the South Fourth Round."
3 Color-Chun-Chan: "Having the same straight tiles for the 3 different number suits. In this case, 1-2-3." Dora: "A title where you get an additional Han just for having it."
Hane Man: "A hand worth about 12000 to 18000 points."
San An Kou: "Getting three separate three of a kind without calling on another player's title."
Dai San Gen: "Having three or more of a kind of dragon tiles. One of the most valuable hands."
Chi Toi Zu: "Winning hand of 7 pairs."
Su An Kou: "4 three of a kinds. Waiting on a tile to complete a pair will make this hand worth more."
Back Vein: Dealing a specific tile if you get another tile that's compatible with the other specific tiles.
Yakuman: "A name for a special hand. Worth the most points in Mahjong."
Pinfu: "All straights, no word tiles, and waiting in more than a single tile."
3-Color-Jun-Chan-Straight: "A hand composed of only 1's and 9's, but straights of 1-2-3 or 7-8-9 are allowed." Closed Wait: "When you are waiting for a tile in the middle to complete a straight."
Kan: "When you make a Kan (put out 4 of a kind), you draw another tile from the end of the deck and flip over another Dora tile." (An exemption) "You can declare a Kan as long as the tiles you are waiting for do not change." "The game ends when there are 14 tiles left in the wall. Declaring Kans or calling in tiles can change the order in which players draw."
Edge Wait: "Wait on two separate tiles to complete a straight. For example, if you have a 2 and 3, you can wait for a 1 or 4."
Ryan Pei Ko: "To have 2 sets of pairs of straights. In this case, 4-4,5-5,6-6, and 7-7,8-8,9-9."
Mangan: "Hands are shown when no one wins at the end of the round. The one not in Ten Pai pays 1000 points to the one who is."
Baiman: "A hand with 8-10 Han worth 16000 to 24000 points."
Chin Itsu: "To win by having all the tiles of a particular number suit."
Hon Itsu: "To win by having only one number suit, and all the rest word tiles."
No Ten: "To be more than two tiles away from winning." "Not being in Ten Pai by the time you run out of tiles to draw. If you are not in Ten Pai, you will have to pay a penalty from 0 to 1,500."
Dead Wall: "The last 14 tiles in the stacks that are off limits. When all the tiles besides these 14 are drawn, the game ends."
Yao Chu: "The 1 and 9 of number tiles and all word tiles."
Ren-chan: "When the head wins, he gets to be the head in the next game, too." "The last game will end only if someone other than the head wins."

Ich sollte mich schämen, den noch nicht gelesen zu haben.
Das würde ich sowieso jedem empfehlen, vor allem Gintama und Nana. :D
