I see you have ashita no joe on your favs. How is it? its been on my watchlist for a while, gotta find a website to actually watch it though

Do yourself a favor and SKIP the middle filler arc in God Mars. It's way too long and drags the whole thing down. By the time the canon resume, you've about had enough lol. I think I scored the show a 5/10, and I was digging it before the filler clicked in. But then I fatigued. The character introduced in the filler is exclusive to it, and things just get back to the business at hand. There might be some slight transitional weirdness for about 5-10 minutes. But the rewatch without the interruption many years later was an 8/10. Not sure if the stars aligned, but it was a big time upgrade.

Yeah... The Incredible Hulk transformation happening because of that was a reach. The only hook was that he was the guy you see at the very beginning of the series. Otherwise he's really nothing special. Now I await the manga returning from a nearly 3 year hiatus lol... Any minute now.

Probably a good sign that I don't recall much about the sub quality. Since I'd definitely remember if they were terrible. It's pretty straight forward stuff anyway. I got in an Ideon rewatch last year myself. Fun times.

Can't go wrong with Tekkaman Blade either.

Netero being one of your favorites would certainly level it up haha. The fight against King is incredible. Kinda wish even more could have done with Netero given how many chapters there were. Pacing was always my biggest gripe with the arc and since Madhouse was adapting the rest at a swift pace, I assumed CA would be as well and possibly fix some of those issues. But they actually did the reverse and made it slower. Removing Kite from the beginning replaced the natural "oh shit, it's Kite." reaction and they had to spend more time during the NGL portion trying to flesh him out so new viewers would somewhat care. I consider this a pretty big mistake. The majority of the characters featured in this arc don't and won't matter going forward either. So it feels like a very elaborate filler arc in ways. Most of it can be skipped during rewatches since all you need to know is why Gon's in that state. I'm still a bigger fan of the 99 version and most rewatches from this point on will be a combination of both, switching over to GI and the rest in the remake.

I seem to prefer his lesser known titles that are more on the humor side best. Daitarn 3 is my second favorite and a top notch SR series. But yeah, MSG, Zeta, Ideon and so on are all damn good. The only ones that blow are Victory Gundam and Brain Powered.

Happy early birthday yourself.

Glad that worked out. Nice that we can have some continuity straight through now. I would always opt to read GI in the manga instead. The OVAs aren't terrible and we've seen plenty of worse anime. It's just a very strange follow up in the looks and vibe department after ep 70 of the original. Are you a yay or nay on Chimera Ants? I don't hate it, just wish it weren't the longest arc and that it didn't take 8 years to finish in the manga lol. There are some highlights, but I find the fandom for CA is a little bizarre. I fail to see the brilliance and I'm one of the biggest HxH fans there is. I don't like how it feels like such a departure from the rest of the series and that it relied so heavily on fighting. Lost the great sense of humor it had as well. Then it magically feels like the series I knew and loved immediately after in the Election arc and the current arc in the manga has all of the tools to be the best in the series. Plot wise, it really does feel like you could skip over CA entirely during rewatches and not miss a beat. All you need to know is why Gon is in that state and you're good to go. So my hope is that the current arc surpasses CA in length since that has never sit well with me heh.

Where do you rank Xabungle among Tomino's work? It's actually my favorite. Enjoyed the hell out of that one. So much fun.

Greetings! Just started watching Ping Pong and quite enjoying it so far! The animation is stellar and definitely adds a lot of character to the show, thanks for the recommendation
FrancescoTheFrog Jul 22, 2021 7:20 PM
Much Thanks! I'll check those out!

Salut FoxEyes! Any shows you'd recommend that has unique animations? cheers!

Just a heads up, the GI OVAs aren't so hot. Due to the production gap and transition into early digital animation... They leave a lot to be desired. Luckily the first OVA was still cel animated and looks excellent to finish that part off. But now that there is an alternative to watching the GI arc (way better in the remake), I usually suggest stopping there. Either taking a break or jumping right into the remake if you're still in the mood. Easier to spot the differences when everything is fresh. Then perhaps checking out the original GI OVAs at some point afterwards if you're curious. The people who have followed this recommendation got a far better experience.

I got amazingly lucky with my first Korean and Chinese choices. I stumbled across Jumong back in 2008 when barely any of this stuff was subbed or available yet. As a a lifelong Suikoden fan, it instantly caught my eye when I scrolled past it one day. Think I was just looking for a new American TV show to watch, and it happened to be mixed in heh. So in typical me fashion, I didn't waste any time and started watching it that night. Was instantly hooked and a whole new world opened up for me. Still took a handful of years until a bunch of other options started popping up. Korean was such an easy adjustment for someone listening to Japanese and reading subtitles for years already. I was 23 historical shows in before I gave a Chinese drama a shot. I was a bit more reluctant since the dialect isn't as appealing based on random stuff I've watched over the years. But drama is Mandarin and easy going once you get a feel for it. Got lucky yet again with Nirvana in Fire being one of the best. Now it's all second nature.

Yeah, think I'll enjoy the manga more overall. It probably nails the look a bit better. Over 60 volumes in so... it must be doing something right. I just have to wait for the manga mood to strike. Which only comes around every few years for me haha.

I've done a lot of heavy lifting over the years ha. Our tastes aligning should make this easy. I foresee some of these being an absolute bullseye since you already dig historical stuff.

Jumong is the perfect place to start, not just because it's my favorite to this very day, but because it's the beginning of the timeline for the Korean variety. Getting this one in early really sets the foundation and makes you appreciate some other shows more.

A couple of music samples.

I know one place where you can grab a few at a time (kinda slow) if you can't find it anywhere else. Avistaz is like the BakaBT for this stuff, though the same problem with the ratio bullshit. They kicked me off a few years ago when my ratio was good for not being active for a bit... So I can't even get back on there heh. I know they have pretty much everything though. I really just use streaming services for drama these days. Viki is my usual go to place. I have a subscription there since I'm watching year round. I think you can watch stuff for free in lower quality perhaps. I'm usually set between that and Netflix. Though, it sucks whenever something gets removed. So I've been trying to rewatch most of my favorites lately before that happens.

Top favorites
Six Flying Dragons
Empress Ki (Amazon Prime)
King Gwanggaeto the Great
Queen Seon Duk (Viki)
Nirvana in Fire (Viki)
Nirvana in Fire 2 (Viki)
The Princess Weiyoung (Viki and Netflix)
Secrets of Three Kingdoms (Viki)

The best feeling was getting super into these and realizing there was a never ending supply. With the amount that come out per year, and the backlog I still have, I'll seemingly never run out. I just finished rewatching Nirvana in Fire 1 and 2. The best of the Chinese variety. Brilliant stuff.

The CGI in Kingdom S1 is a bummer. Is S2 looking better? Maybe it can be like Initial D and look a tad better with each installment heh.
HisokaHajime Feb 27, 2021 1:17 PM
Have you ever watched any Korean or Chinese historical dramas? Seeing that you're watching Kingdom at the moment prompted this question heh. I haven't seen Kingdom, but I'm usually not too big on how this genre is handled in anime form. So I might read the manga instead. For something semi similar to the dramas I watch, Vinland Saga is probably the best comparison. The way that builds and how the action is portrayed. So it makes me think you could potentially get into this genre more on the drama side. This is what I've seen so far. Describing the best ones as epic wouldn't even do them justice. So I'm just throwing it out there. I've become accustomed to barely anyone following up the recommendation haha. So no pressure or anything. They just have NO IDEA what they're missing out on.

If it's good as you say. I'll consider watching it along with some other old stuff. I am aware of your complaint as well so i'll keep it in mind.

I have watched all Leijiverse from 70s-80s except Queen Millennia. I didn’t watch any ovas from 90s to 2000s. Tho I heard Harlock Endless Odyssey is very good.

Harlock SSX was good atleast in beginning episodes. It had potential to surpass even original. But as it goes it was still good. However I feel like they wrapped up the story in last 4 eps. I feel like atleast 10 episodes worth of missing in plotline. I wish it was longer. Harlock SSX along with Queen Millennia didn’t do well in 80s due to mecha genre.

I like adventure stuff that's why I decided to watch one piece. I can't believe i finished the first half myself. Anyway thank you good luck to you too in watching some good stuff.

urusawa is my favorite from what i have watched and read from him so far, pretty much everything i liked and it ranges from good to great, i cant wait for the adaptation of pluto if that is still on

what have you been into recently besides your anime binge?
TheCoolGuy82 Sep 13, 2020 7:40 PM
Yeah. It's been a long while. I'm fine. Thanks for asking.

No problem. Yeah AnJ truly effected me in a lot of emotional ways. I still can't forget the last scene. Yeah rewatching your favourite stuff from past is a magnificent experience. Yeah they should remastered the OG AnJ series it deserves way better.

Oh yeah. I am really fond of Leiji Matsumoto's works. Of all of them Captain Harlock is my most favourite. The 1978 series. I heard of Queen Millennia before but never all subs at the time I was watching all Leijiverse. Maybe I'll give it a shot if the subs complete. Thanks again.
