Not to be mean by why you use term "deaf-mutes"?
I ask cause it can be seen as derogatory term.

Most Deaf people are not Mute and they can speak but just pick not to.
Most just use the term Deaf, if person is Mute they use term Mute same Hard of Hearing use term Hard of Hearing.
If person is Deaf and Mute they don't say Deaf-Mute they really say they are Deaf.
Have few friends who are all over the scale as well as gone to school with people from all over the scales.
As for me, I was Born Hard of Hearing with Speech problem, ended up in Coma when was child and came out of it Mute.
Was told i would never speak again, would need to learn sign language and have to write to talk the rest of my life.
Took me some years but i would force myself to try and learn to speak, why my voice is messed up i can use my voice if want or need to.
Just use to be super shy about my voice cause always had people make fun of me cause of it, so even if was learning to speak again did not speak much.

Yes, been working my job for few years now alright, helping customer is not really problem for me.
As for my Husband, He can Hear and speak just fine, but he knows sign language.
It's really long story how we met each other but to make it short.
Back then even like today unless i trust the person or doing my job i don't really speak.
Well when him and me started to become friends i was still only using writing and little sign language around him with head nods and stuff like that.
He took it on himself to learn sign language, gone to sign language classes and was even asking me to teach him some sign language or help him go over some stuff he learned.
It meant lot to me he would ever do something like that just so he can understand and talk to me better.
(We have lots of stuff in common with each other and did enjoy hanging out with each other.)
Both got to the point we had crush on each other, he was to shy to ask me out so i asked him out using my voice.
What he said about my voice after I asked him out made me start to tear up.
He said: That's Hanako-san's hidden voice... it's beautiful would love if let me hear more of it please.
Was after that really are relationship took off, lots happen in time but he proposed to me and I said yes.
Like over year later we got married this year.

With hearing aids know it's recommended to take them out and leave them out so can give ears brake.

I'm a interpreter but not really a Certified interpreter...
Work as interpreter for friends and random people. (Will explain more in little)
Only ever got up to my Associate's Degree but never my Bachelor's Degree.
Kind of stupid but when started going little Deaf kind of let it stop me from getting my Bachelor's Degree.
The Associate Degree's is still helpful can help me out and kind of get job with it.
Just most places will look at the Associate Degree's and go: This is really nice...
Look at person with Bachelor's Degree and go: This is way better.
When tried getting my waitress job long back my Manager seen lots of stuff in my file.
She was telling me: I'm sorry but your overqualified for job like this.
Had told her like: Please don't give me that overqualified stuff, I'm willing to work here with the same pay doing the same stuff as your other workers.
Ended up getting the job, i'm one of her best workers she has and do get paid little more but she don't mind cause i bring lots of customers.
Out of all her workers only my friend Haruko-san and me know English so we can help people in English.
Why I'm the only worker who knows ASL (Forgot lots of it) and know JSL really good so can help people who need sign language.
My Good friend who is Deaf i help her and be her interpreter for stuff so she don't have to take the time to write down everything.
Have two friends who are both Hard of hearing only one was born Mute why the other has speech problem and picks to be Mute unless she really has to speak.
Help both of them here and there.
At my own wedding my Good friend who is Deaf wanted to make a speech and asked me if I would be her interpreter please?
Told her Sure i can for her no problem.
(Seen she was really shy so told her it be alright stuff like that.)
Told all the people before she started: My good friend likes to make speech, she is Deaf and asked me to be her interpreter.
Might sound like I'm talking about myself but ask you all focus on her, Why you all will hear my voice it's my good friend speaking not me.
People liked her speech, they had all there focus on her and gave her the respect she deserved.
