So don't make fun of me, but I wasted quite a bit of valuable time this weekend creating my AWCc tracker. I'm so proud of my work, but it was too great of a reason to procrastinate, so it ultimately stressed me out. I definitely snagged inspiration from another club member's layout, but I really liked it and it helped me play around with BBCode more, since I'm not very used to it yet. But just look at it! Here :D. I'm sure I'll move to focusing on more time-based challenges in the future, but right now I'm in my "challenge completionist" era and want to turn in as many of the challenges I've completed so far with just my previously watched anime. Luckily, nearly 200 anime watched covers quite a few of those first-time easy modes, and I'm having a blast filling out the Genre challenges at the moment. Though I'm excited to really dig into the Seiyuu challenge, since it was already a goal of mine to watch as much content involving the glorious timbres of Tsuda, Kenjirou and Nakamura, Yuuichi as I could.
I agree. The idea that many incredible stories may never get an audience due to how it may be perceived in this overly critical and defeatist mindset that is shared by so many now is so saddening, because I know there are just as many who can find the value in these stories and appreciate them for what they are regardless of any perceived flaws. I have seen well considered critiques through MAL, which I also appreciate, though some forums have made me question some people's sanity and state of mind at times.
I just checked out YayakoChii's profile, and it's so well done! I'm still in the process of reworking my own profile, so these profiles are all great reference points for how I might want mine to look like, as well as your outline for your personal tagging system. It's all very helpful.
Chihayafuru is definitely less of an underdog story, since there's an early time skip that jumps from our main character's adolescence to her first year in high school, which doesn't depict her gradual progression in the game, though we still see her and the rest of the club fight against stronger teams and grow in response to those challenges much like we see in Haikyuu. I would classify it as more of a drama centered around friendship and the connections the club members made through the sport they love, but it definitely still has its goofy aspects, which drew me even deeper into the story, since it was similar to one of the things I also loved so much about Haikyuu. I don't mind if you DM me those sites. I'll take a look through them and see if I like it enough to finally drop this stupid ticket-system. Right?? Blue Box has been such a refreshing read, and I can't wait to see how they portray their relationship more in the anime. I had no idea "misunderstanding" was a tag! I'll to keep an eye out for it now, too. I absolutely loved the first season of Kimi ni Todoke, but I nearly couldn't get through the second season because more than half of it covered the unnecessary drama around assumptions and misunderstandings that was just so frustrating to watch.
HnK sounds like it covers such a unique and compelling concept, and I love stories that explore what it means to be human, so that's definitely moving up in both my manga and anime lists. Is there one you'd recommend I start first? And I get that, some themes just don't appeal to people and that's perfectly understandable. I've been holding off on trying out more Isekais, because the concept doesn't really interest me, but I'm sure there's some good ones out there that are worth me expanding my horizons for. I'm just in no rush at the moment to check any out.
Trust me, these comments have me taking time and going into depth, which I really enjoy, but is also a bit time-consuming. I doesn't help that me ADHD brain wants to bring up a hundred more topics that relate to, like, one random sentence that is mentioned. That's probably the reason we keep adding paragraphs to our comments lol. I'm actually studying English Education right now! I also plan to get my Master's in Library Science, but where I live requires an Ed. degree to be a school librarian and I want to give myself more options. I'm also minoring in Psychology. I have an Associate's in Photography, but that wasn't as good of a fit for me in terms of a career, so I'm just keeping that as a hobby.
Now you've got me excited for Lazy Santa! My memory has definitely been getting worse about certain things, so I feel you on the forgetfulness.
The Shibuya Arc was incredible and quite a lot of people feel that way. I'm sure there's valid reasons somewhere for people to dislike about it, but most of the time I feel like people nitpick and hate on mainstream media just because it's mainstream or popular, and I just don't get the point of that.
I can totally see how modern Shounen stories would be rushed for that reason. I feel like it would be so stressful to me as an author to create a suitable ending for such a long-running story, but I wouldn't want a rushed, incongruous conclusion either. Bit of a double-edged sword there. It's refreshing to get the perspective of someone who's more familiar with the history of anime and manga than I am, so I appreciate you sharing your analysis.
I get that. The app is not my favorite format of MAL, though it does make updating episodes pretty fast and easy, as I just have to click the plus button on an entry and be done. I do hate how it hides certain mature content though. I'll have to check out SheyCroix's system as well! Her profile is so fun and personalized from what I've seen already, and she's been a great resource when it comes to customizing my own MAL account. I really have to applaud all of the effort she puts into this.
Goodness, thank you so much for sharing you rating system! It gives me a great foundation to start from, so I really appreciate it.
I'm not really suited for reviews, but I feel like I can dabble in some recommendations and see how it goes. I think the most glaring resemblance between the two is the visceral and overwhelming love of each story's depicted sport. Haikyuu goes into great depth about the different concepts and techniques of volleyball, while Chihayafuru portrays boundless enthusiasm for the cultural history of karuta. Though they both explore different themes, and Chihayafuru carries a more drama-centered plot, that overarching love for their club activity never dwindles. I have considered using other sites to avoid the ticket systems, but I worry about how faithful some translations are, so that keeps me wary. (If you have any personal recommendations for sites with well-received translations though, I'll gladly look into them). Yes, actually! It's been awhile since I read the beginning of the Ao no Hako, but the anime has been pretty faithful from what I can remember. The two main characters are portrayed so beautifully and they actually COMMUNICATE. So far in the manga, if there is any misunderstanding, their concerns are voiced and then they attempt to rectify it in a pretty reasonable amount of time. Like, it still takes a bit, but it's not 20+ chapters of angst and miscommunication. And they're respectful of the other's feelings! Okay, rant done...for now :D
I've heard great things about Houseki no Kuni! The manga and the anime. I really gotta start that soon. I haven't watched any idols to make a judgment yet, but I know they're a hot topic on MAL. Is it just the shallowness that throws people off or do you think it's something else, too?
And sorry for the chat delay. My procrastination finally caught up with me, so I've been buried in homework.
The Trick-or-Treat challenge is definitely expansive, so we'll see how many baskets I'll manage to fill. I really enjoy the concept, so either way, I know that I'll have fun with it. Oooh Lazy Santa, you say? Sounds exciting! I was wondering if you actually meant Silver Diamond instead lol.
Yes exactly! It honestly started to feel like a completely different manga to me and no longer like JJK. I think the pacing played a big hand in that, like certain events dragged on for sooo long in the latter half of the manga and then the ending felt extremely abrupt in a very uncharacteristic way for JJK, which was pretty disappointing to me. I haven't checked out Tokyo revengers yet, but it's a wonder why modern Shounen is having problems with endings. I haven't read enough to consider what the reasons are, but do you have any theories?
Only lately have I been using my computer/laptop to check in on MAL, otherwise I was mainly using the app and phone browser which doesn't show all those cool tags or comments when looking at another user's profile. Now that I have been seeing them, it's really cool seeing the creative systems people come up with. I've also been struggling with understanding exactly what makes a 7 or a 6 for me. I'm not always the best at putting my feelings into words, so making a system has been kind of difficult for me. I've been hoping that seeing other's explanations on their rating system would inspire me, but I haven't found one that really hits what I value in entertainment yet, so I'm still figuring that out, too. Aww, the movie sounds really nice - I'll definitely check it out then.
I've really been enjoying reading Chihayafuru lately! A lot of aspects of it remind me of Haikyuu, and I was thinking of making a recommendation of the 2 when I finish it. Though, I'm reading it through Kodansha's website and their ticket system, so I've been suffering through only about 3 chaps. a day, and it sucks not being able to just binge it all. I will also never say no to chats about Haikyuu, as you may have already noticed. Oh! I started reading Ao no Hako again after putting it on hold for awhile, since the anime came out, and I am loving it (both show and manga)! The show's animation is absolutely stunning and the chemistry between the 2 main characters is unmatched and just so sweet. Highly recommend checking that one out, too. Is there any manga/anime you'd like to chat about?
I'm definitely newer to anime, as I just started watching a few years ago, but I've noticed how expansive it is, so I'm definitely looking forward to delving deeper into what it has to offer through AWCc. I am currently signed up for the Trick-or-Treat and October challenges, and I've definitely considered looking into the HiScore challenge as well. Is Quick Silver a novel? I didn't see it on your list, but is it any good so far? I love reading in general, so I'll take any good recs if you have them.
I have pretty mixed feelings about the JJK manga and its ending. I won't spoil anything since you haven't finished it yet, but I didn't really love it or hate it - I kinda just became indifferent after a certain point. Though I'm not one to overlook how great most of it was to rate it so poorly because of an imperfect ending, like I know many people did.
Thank you! I have a self-reminder blog post explaining the tags, though I haven't made it public yet. I really like your tagging system, too! I don't overanalyze media much, as I stake a lot of its rating on how much I enjoyed it (influenced by certain aspects, of course), so my current tagging system doesn't feel totally right to me. I might have to rework it a little in the future. I'm glad to know someone else who also didn't enjoy Dakaretai Otoko 1-i ni Odosarete Imasu.! I think it presented certain topics and tropes in a way that I personally really can't stomach. If you consider the movie better, though, then I might have to look into it, because although I didn't enjoy how most of the story was handled, I found the ending to be really sweet.
I don't mind at all! I don't usually get to have quality conversation about anime or manga with most of the people I know, and the ones I do, don't use MAL or care much for the completion/listing aspects of it. So it's nice having these aimless chats :)
I can totally relate to your slump, though mine goes the other way as an anime watching slump, so I hope these AWCs maybe help with that. I haven’t yet read many highly acclaimed mangas, but I can confidently say that Hinata’s arc following the match with Nekom portrays some of the best character growth and development I’ve read so far. I highly recommend giving it a shot once reading manga excites you again. Plus, it’s an absolute tragedy that we’re only getting one more movie adaptation to span the last 80 (and most impactful) chapters of the manga.
I’m not very artistically inclined either, so I feel you on that front.
My PFP is also from JJK, though it’s a play on Gojo’s famous line and the scene with one of Fushiguro’s rabbit shikigami going crazy in the fight against Toji.
That’s a pretty apt observation! I think the reason I like those quiet characters the most is because I myself am not very talkative or outgoing, so I often relate to them more. I still hold comedic value in high regard with my favorites though, so while I still adore Bokuto and Kirishima for those reasons (and Hayate from CCD, which I see is a favorite in your shows), I find the quiet goofiness in Amijiki’s personality and Akaashi's absurd reasoning of Bokuto’s antics in their interactions to be really endearing. Quite a few of my favorites also embody traits that I find very admirable and I aspire to be more like, such as Maomao, Vladilena, and Kita. I’ll have to move some favorites around though, because as much as I like shining a light on more of the supporting cast members, after reading Haikyuu and what hasn’t been adapted yet, Hinata now holds a very special place in my heart as someone deeply inspiring. Btw, did you draw your pfp by chance?
