Nah, it's okay, I was in the mood for writing yesterday. I enjoyed thinking about them anyway, there are a load of other films that I didn't mention which were great like Perfect Blue, which is probably the best 'mindfuck' anime there is. It was directed by Satoshi Kon and he's really highly rated as a director, he died a while ago and people are disappointed about that because he was pretty amazing.

I meant the Avatar: The Last Airbender film, it did pretty badly considering its source material. The series is really well written, I'm going to buy it on DVD some time soon.

It's a little stressful, the friend I came with wants to do a load of stuff and I don't exactly want to miss it but I'd rather not be rushing around all the time. It's an interesting place, some of the street food is really good but some of it is pretty 'meh'.

I don't have twitter but I do have an account on Hummingbird which is a website that's just started up recently. I think it's pretty alright but I haven't done much with it so far. It's absolutely delightful, it's one of the most lovely films I have ever seen. The animation is great, the characters are cute and realistic (kinda sorta) and the soundtrack is absolutely brilliant, I actually have it on my iPod.

It's first in a series of fantastically animated films, it's pretty gory at some points and you may not be up for that so just beware of that. That aside, it's by Ufotable, the animators behind Fate/Zero and it's really good. The first film doesn't make much sense on its own, it's a series of films and you'll have to commit to watching them all if you want to give it a fair chance.

It's a classic, it's Miyazaki's first film to achieve an academy award and it's probably his most popular among western audiences. It's a very good film and it explores the idea of a spiritual traditional Japan without glorifying it, the idea of consumerist society also comes into it.

It's a brilliant film, it was the director's first film but that doesn't show at all, he did a really good job, I was amazed by the whole thing when I saw it, I really want to buy it on Blu-Ray.

Another Miyazaki film, it's old as well. It's a very good story and it's very engaging. It's pretty mature and I really enjoyed it.

They're odd, they're all short self-contained stories and some of them are truly great. From the original Genius Part I would also suggest you try 'Baby Blue' I really liked one of the song in it and it was quite a simple, lovely story that felt like a real situation that got out of hand. It felt realistic, even though something that would never happen in real life happened.

Well, the film wasn't in the top ten. The film was awful, being a fan of Avatar I pretend it didn't actually happen. The protagonists may be kids but it isn't immature, it's pretty ageless in my opinion.

Sorry if I've been wordy today, and altogether long-winded, I wrote about ten pages worth of a journal and I'm still in the wordy mindset.

I liked it because it was short and sweet, it was a good story and I could see where it could go with it if it was given the funding. Even so, I'm happy with it the way it was. Actually, it was one of four short animations made by young animators, they were just little things to kind of showcase what they can do. One of them has actually been given a second episode. It's called Little Witch Academia, http://myanimelist.net/anime/14349/Little_Witch_Academia and as you can see on its page it generated enough interest to gain a sequel. It was quite good as well, it had a Harry Potter-ish kind of feel to it but without the over-arcing plot. I think they're known as short films.

Yeah, I think it could easily get a remake, it has a loyal fanbase and it could easily pull a Hunter X Hunter style remake in ten years or so. Sooner even if it wanted to go the Brotherhood route.

Noooooo. Nah, the film was largely considered to be awful, I couldn't watch more than ten minutes of it because of the difference between it and the original animation. Unless you mean the film Avatar as in 'that film with all of the huge blue people). The original series of Avatar was pretty amazing, it isn't anime but it's at the standard that anime is. What did you think of the film?

I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway, I think it's an anime that's well worth watching owing to its lovely visuals. I hope there are more like it. Did you ever watch Death Billiards? It was a short made with Madhouse and it was pretty good looking as well. I think GG subbed it in 720p if you'd like to try it.

Do you like anime shorts?

Either I suppose, kind of like a FMA: Brotherhood kind of deal where they made it with better animation, they made it more streamlined and they followed the original material more closely (the first FMA anime had an original ending because the manga hadn't finished, FMA:B was made following the manga till the end).

I would really like to see Naruto or One Piece remade in a more streamlined way. Old One Piece episodes are borderline unwatchable and old Naruto was full of unnecessary fillers so that it didn't catch up to the manga. I think if they remade the whole thing they could do a better job at creating a streamlined anime which people would really enjoy, there are a lot of fans who're put off my filler in Naruto and I'm one of them.

I would also really like to see an Eva remake as a series because the films look incredible but they missed out a few of my favourite scenes and I miss the character development of the series, the films don't have the time to do it as well.

On a different note, it isn't anime, it's an American animation but have you ever seen Avatar: The Last Airbender? It's probably my overall favourite show. It looks kind of childish but it's really entertaining, its humour becomes pretty good for all ages and the fights/powers are always really good. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417299/ . The voice acting is good as well, it isn't jarring like dubs are.

Oh, Brave New World is a good one as well. I'd forgotten about it. Did you ever see The Animatrix?

I know, it was pretty amazing. I really liked it because it was short but really beautiful in terms of the animation. Did you like the story or the characters? I found them kind of weak myself but the animation and the music made up for it.

If you could have any anime remade, what would it be?

The Matrix is a very good example but I'd say dystopias are usually about societal breakdowns, like when a government goes too extreme or that sort of thing.

No, they're very different works. Battle Royale is pretty much The Hunger Games but it was made about ten years earlier. The talk of Battle Royale being a programme rather than a game and it doesn't go into the society itself very much. It's more about the survival aspect of the story. It goes between a load of different perspectives as well, it feels a lot like an anime when you read it actually.

It's okay, it isn't his real name (probably), it's a reference to Kyon from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. By the way, I think you should probably watch the first two seasons of TMoHS and then re-watch The disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya because it's one of my favourite anime films and that's because of all of the build up from the seasons. It was all about missing the characters being who they were and understanding why Kyon was so upset about losing them. You'll never get that context if you haven't seen the original series.

That sounds kind of pushy, sorry, it's just that you didn't seem to like it all that much and it's a really big thing for most anime fans who've seen it all.

I like the premise of it, the idea of how the world could change into something tat's totally foreign to the way it is now. I just think it works really well because it sets up a really interesting environment and characters often do well in it as well.

I liked Nineteen Eighty Four, Battle Royale and (sort of) The Hunger Games. Though the Hunger Games is pretty much a direct copy of Battle Royale. The book of Battle Royale is good, the film is weird and the manga is ridiculously over-sexualised. I haven't read the manga but I saw a chapter of it and it seemed pretty messed up.

The movie version of what?

Yeah, I do like dystopia though, there are a few anime with that kind of thing in mind and they're often very good.

Yeah, it's a good mixture. I'd like to write a dystopia, I think they can be really exciting and they have the potential to be very interesting. I think Kino no Tabi was one and it was excellent. It wasn't really a sad dystopia, it was more of an odd world kind of story where she travels to different countries and learns about their cultures then moves on. It was really episodic but very cool.

I actually had the idea to write something similar (in terms of the world idea) but the characters were very different, and so was the overall feel.

Do you have Skype? I just added xKyon on it and I thought it might be handy for when I'm away.

That's true, but some people practically live for it. I have a couple of friends who study during most of their free time. At least it wasn't time wasted. :)

I'd say any kind of effort that way counts as trying.

I mean writing conversations and that sort of thing, it's really hard to make up a character and keep their personality, motivations and feelings in mind when you're writing what they're doing. You also need to keep in mind what you want to happen, what would actually happen and how the characters would feel about it. It's just a lot to remember.

As for describing things, I find it hard to make up environments, I'm not sure whether I'm being too descriptive, not descriptive enough or anything like that. It's just an awkward thing to write.

What kind of story would you write if you managed to write a full one?

Yeah, I just felt like I didn't really fit into any working roles I tried. I think education's the best way to get started on a good career, other jobs where you rise up through a company require luck as well as intelligence and skill and I don't really like to work based on luck. Have you never considered doing something else or is being a doctor what you want to do now?

I can't blame your friend at all, I hated education when I left school but I've changed my attitude since I left and I think what I'm doing now is the best way forward.

My real ambition is just to have a stable life where I can do what I want, live the way I want and eventually support a family. I think it's a good idea to have a goal like that early on.

Have you tried writing something original or have you tried writing fan-fiction?

Sometimes it's not that I get bored, it's that I don't feel like going back to something I've written. I really like thinking of the premise to a story though, I like the world creation aspect of writing but I'm not very good at writing conversations or describing the setting. I haven't been reading all that much lately, I might give it a go while I'm travelling.

By the way, I'm going to be away for a few weeks; I'll probably be on here now and again but I won't be on every day like I am now. Just a heads up on the subject.

Medicine is very impressive, well done. I can imagine that you wouldn't have all that much free time, it must be hard.

Yeah, it's not the easiest subject, a couple of my friends have failed what they're doing but they're having another run at it.

I'm working in a café but the main thing I'm doing is A-Levels, I'm going to go to university next year (I hope anyway) and I'm wanting to do English Literature. After that I think I'll either try and go into teaching or try and be a critic. I've wanted to write a story for a while now but I get bored from writing after a while. Have you tried writing before?

Ah, I'm not actually at university yet, I'm doing my A-Levels, I phrased that poorly. I left school at sixteen and started working, I only went back to college last year. Are you at university? What do you study?

Nah, I only know Akihabara because it's pretty much otaku central in Japan. I've heard of a couple of places like Kyoto and Okinawa, they're often mentioned in anime. I think Okinawa is a beach type place from what I've heard, it's supposed to be quite nice anyway. I wouldn't worry about not knowing much about it, it'd be pretty easy to find a few interesting places to go on the internet anyway.

Have you any idea what you're wanting to work as?

It's okay, it's a handy site; the torrents take up a lot of memory but they're high quality.

Yeah, parents can be trying. My parents would let me go anywhere really, the only issue is money, I would have to pay for it all myself and I can't really afford it. I don't have any friends who are into anime either so I don't think I would have anyone to go with.

I think I might go after I finish university and have consistent work because I'd love to go, but I want to have enough money to enjoy it properly, rather than just cheaply. Akihabara is on my list of places to go and I know that there's no way that anything over there is cheap. You've never seen Genshiken but it's a good anime for learning a bit about otaku life in Japan, it's more realistic than most anime but it's still very humorous. You might not like the art style when it first starts because it's kind of old and it's more of a realistic feel but after the first season it changes by quite a lot and becomes more typical.

You don't have to watch it or anything but it's a good anime for anime fans outside of Japan to get a better idea of what people think of anime inside of Japan.

Thanks, I'd like to critique anime or something but I'm not sure that I take enough notice of things that matter. I'm pretty bad at concentrating on the parts critics critique.

Yeah, the prettiest I've seen is probably Kotonoha no Niwa, they must have put so much work into it. I really liked the look of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, anime films often look amazing, pretty much every Ghibli film that I've seen is really impressive. I also really like the Evangelion Rebuild films for their aesthetics, their action scenes look incredible.
