I don't know if you're still here, but I was wondering about your thoughts on Yen Press's official translation on the whole series. Volume 7 just came out today. I've been kinda observing your posts here in MAL after finishing Vol. 7 today. I'm currently in that zone where I'm just thinking about the series deeply after reading the epilogue.

I never thought that you are also here, any novel recommendations with the same thrill as of Hakomari?

Oh, that indeed looks quite interesting judging just from the synopsis. Will definitely give this a shot. Also, I just came upon 終わる世界の片隅で、また君に恋をする. the synopsis of this one looks quite interesting and similar as well. Have you heard/read this one?
Hmm, I haven't played VNs in a while. Don't have time for them as of late, haha. But I'll keep that in mind whenever I find time to get back to them.

Rengoku hime... that's from the author of Senketsu no Elf right? I already feel the darkness in it, LOL. I really like Senketsu no Elf despite all the darkness/despair in it, so this one's worth checking.
Nozaki Mado, don't think I heard of him before, but I'll check them out, thanks! Also, do you know if all his books have digital releases? If you say all of them are connected in some way, I'd rather not skip any of them. But I only buy digital books, so I hope none of them are print-only.

Hey Eusth! First of all, thanks and good work on translations up to now. You really have a great taste, haha. On that note, I wanted to ask for recommendations on what to read if you don't mind :p. Do you know of any novel with...lets say a plot, or rather "feeling" it give off, similar to Tabi ni Deyou, or maybe Hakomari. Something nice with interesting plot, preferably one that's not translated. Kinda short on those kinds of novels lately. Haven't found something that could be said to be truly close to them in the vibes it gives. Thanks in advance :)

Also, I wanted to ask if you use Discord, and if so, would you like to join Baka-Tsuki server and/or a Translator server on it. (Latter is pretty much a chilling place for many translators/editors, and place for help/suggestions with TL related stuff).

...I did give up back in October out of laziness, but now studying Japanese is pretty much an addiction. I've done it for much longer than I've ever done it before, and not doing it actually makes me feel empty. Between school and home, it's become that significant part of my life in which I can be myself, retain some sort of individuality or privacy or something. Ahh...that sounds a bit dumb, but at any rate, studying Japanese is what fills me and what defines me at the moment.

Anywayyyyy, thanks again! I ended up purchasing a year's worth of subscription for WaniKani as a way of learning the Kanji in a more 'comfortable' way than through RTK (i.e. it doesn't feel like I'm actually learning Kanji if all I know is an English keyword), but it's slowwww and I've started trying to learn Kanji through other means, so I think I'm actually going to use RTK for a few hundred Kanji and see how that goes.

Visual Novels sound like the way to go. They're a division of Japanese media that I really haven't delved into much beyond Katawa Shoujo, Steins;Gate spin-offs, a tiny bit of Umineko and...no, wait, that's about it. There's a lot to discover at the same time that I'm learning Japanese! That look-up feature is going to be immensely helpful, I know already. Grammar concepts can only be internalised so much in a vacuum, after all.

HakoMari's finally getting an official release, huh? I look forward to purchasing the first volume, and I'm hoping it holds up to your translation. Well, eventually, I'll be able to read the original light novel in Japanese anyway. Might give it a shot at the latter half of next year. Speaking of which, I'll have to read your Tsukumodo translations sometime, since I've loved everything you've translated so far.

So, I've been studying Japanese rigorously every day since February, I've been through the vast majority of Tae Kim's guide (minus his advanced section, which I think I'm not going to bother with until I learn the vocabulary being used because it's headache-inducing otherwise), and I have somewhere around 1k vocabulary + ~300 kanji under my belt.

I want to start reading stuff even though my grammar is very shaky. As expected, 僕らはどこにも開かない was not a good place to start...it doesn't seem to be nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, though.

Still, above my paygrade for now. I thought back to the advice you gave me last year, and how you learned Japanese - the main component being "reading, reading, reading."

What did you end up reading, if you don't mind my asking?

I see that you have watched both Kimi no Nawa and Koe no Katachi, how do you think about them. I'm planning on going to the cinema for Kimi no Nawa, so just need some opinions :)

How was it compared to the original, was there anything difference, or was it just the original with new illustration?

Do you recall what you did to learn Japanese? Personally, I don't think I could do RTK. Grammar is my biggest focus right now, but I'm being certain to push heavily on learning kanji too -- mostly via vocab. The first 2000 should be easy enough, but the next 1000 is probably going to take a while. I had a quick skim of Hirakanai while looking for the furigana for the character's names, and it looks a lot easier than I thought it would be. I might even be able to tackle it within the next 6 months, depending on how fast (and effectively) I study and how well I can balance that with my last year of high school...

The Genki books net you 1,700 vocab and 317 Kanji in total, and while there is some overlap between "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese", it seems to be hailed as the 'unofficial sequel to the Genki series'.

Seriously? I just bought the Kindle version without the pictures a few months back and they update it with Yoshitobe ABe's drawings, of all people? Urk. All of this is tempting enough to coax me into re-buying the new version. Maybe. Do you happen to have an Amazon.jp link for the new version, preferably in Kindle format? It's expensive to import stuff to Australia, and it was difficult enough already to setup that Amazon.jp account >_<

Thanks for the recommendations, though Nisio Isin's going to be on the backburner for a while! On that note, do you happen to know what level Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita is at? That's the other light novel I want to read. One of the translators for it on Baka-Tsuki mentioned that it had 'very elegant prose', which seems to signal to me that the series is going to be a bit of a tough read.

I might eventually get into VNs. Most of them never get translated, so that's a nice perk of knowing Japanese. No idea which ones I'd want to read, though.

Sounds like solid advice. I'm definitely going to at least try to translate the first chapter when I'm able to develop my skillset enough, though. It was the catalyst for my decision to seriously study Japanese, after all. Plus, it's a tangible way of evaluating just how much my Japanese has improved since I first had a crack at the novel.

Hirakanai is the only novel I want to translate, though that being the case, I do want to do it well. Maybe I'll take it at a casual pace and try and translate a page a day, perhaps. Should take a little under a year to complete at that rate, though I'm not sure how well the translation quality would hold.

Oh well, that's for the future. No point getting too ambitious quite yet!
