I've never actually seen Death Note if you could believe it. Gasp, I know. Never seen Death Note. I am such a heathen. xD
I didn't finish Astra, but a lot of things further along in the anime just didn't sit well. The pacing was all over the place, everything felt rushed and poorly story-boarded, the characters were really Two-Dimensional and we had so little of them to work with that I had trouble even using my imagination to think about more stuff that could better flesh them out.
Honestly I'd have rather had a story about them AFTER they made it back to Earth, grown up and became adults and then there are small bits of story that are shown (flashbacks) but that help explain why certain things are happening to them as adults. THAT would have been a far more interesting anime to watch for me.
What we got was pretty empty, meaningless and bland. By the books I guess I'd call it.
If you need to watch something for 9 episodes out of 12/24 to get good, you know something is very wrong with it... Also, the number of childishly dumb things in their actions, decisions and the story as a whole in the first few episodes is just ridiculous.
