Yeah, SAO does seem like my sort of thing, but mishandled plots aren't really. I'm sure I could squeeze some sort of enjoyment out of it, though, and there are people who still give it (9)'s and (10's) despite its flaws, so who knows?

It's a shame, really, because I do enjoy KonoSuba quite a bit, and I don't mind episodic structures in the slightest. However, the whole greater plot at hand feels so shoehorned and avoided that it might as well not even be an issue, that is, until the moments where Aqua brings it up out of nowhere to provide some sort of legitimacy to her and Kazuma even being there. The character development and interactions are both the best parts of the series, that's for sure.

I hope Deen does improve for the next project, whatever it may be, indeed.

If you become a MAL Supporter, you can extend your favorites in each category to twenty, but each of the features that are a part of the MAL Supporter privilege package are features that should already be a part of the main site. I also don't really feel inclined to financially support it because there are few updates. Perhaps if more work was put into bringing this site into the modern century, I'd love to help out.

I'm not sure that's a particularly factual statement regarding Western voice actors, as my friend is familiar with the voice acting industry and there's a good bit of resources available for those within the field. Personally, I think it's more a matter of focus and specialization, since anime is so large in Japan that it's a lot more profitable to be a seiyuu, and with the added element of the competition as you've mentioned, it's given a much more serious look than perhaps over here, where voice actors can often be re-used quite a bit (Steven Bluhm is one of the worst offenders for that).

In terms of genres, my top three favorites are fantasy, action, and comedy. Slice of Life can be considered up there, but it's often hit-or-miss. My least favorite are mecha, shounen, and school, strangely enough three of the most common genres.

Also, on the note of seiyuu, I can't believe I forgot to mention Rie Takahashi. She actually has one of my favorite voices, though she's voiced so few characters of whom I am familiar.

I haven't actually seen Sword Art Online (yet), but I am quite aware of what a polarizing and controversial series it has proved to be. Execution can indeed damn a series with the greatest potential, which is why the information of who the studio and producers involved in a given production is so important.

KonoSuba is definitely one of the better series of its type, but I think that comes more on behalf of the characters and their interactions rather than the actual structure of the world. In that context, I would have to say DanMachi has a more established lore and setting. In regards to a third season, it would most definitely be nice. All we really know, at least officially, is that an "anime project" is in the works, but whether or not that makes a new season or some sort of OVA is up for debate. I just can't imagine with all its praise and popularity that it wouldn't continue for as long as Kadokawa could finance.

Sorry to say, but the animation being "intentionally bad" just sounds like a slick excuse Deen would use to explain their poor showing. The first season was more than successful with what I believe to be pretty decent animation, and the biggest complaint that most folks (including myself) seem to have with the second is its poor animation. If this was an experiment on their behalf, they failed, and they shouldn't have even done it in the first place. The hilarity of the characters and their misadventures should be enough to make people laugh, and if you have to worsen the quality of your animation for comedic effect, that reflects extremely poorly upon the series. Anyway, whether or not they intended to make it bad on purpose is immaterial; the fact that is that is not okay nor does it reflect well upon the studio.

On a side note, there are times where something that could be considered "poor animation" could be used for genuine comedic effect. It's important to explain the difference here to avoid confusion. For example, as you've seen One Punch Man, I would argue that Saitama's simplified appearance (though it was present in the manga) is integral to the story as to solidify him as the boring, simple looking man but with the added side of inhuman power. I would even say some scenes in KonoSuba where Aqua is whining or crying erratically could have been proper uses of poor animation because it reflects her character well and shows the insanity of the situation. The majority of issues where there's just poor framing, ugly looking characters, and laughable body animation were not integral to anything and just lazy.

I'm familiar with a few of those seiyuu, but it's honestly incredible how many have much such a name for themselves in the industry. It feels like seiyuu are typically better on average than any given voice actor in the West. Shame the MAL favorites list is limited to just 10 people; at this rate, I need something like 100.

It's okay. I would rather folks take their time than have the conversation devolve into one or two sentences.

Yeah, you definitely can't transfer everything from something as extensive as a light novel into an anime; it's just not practical. They all should just serve as various elements of a given work to supplement each other, and I would say most series accomplish this quite well. There's been few series, if any at all, where I haven't wanted to go and read its source material to compare the two and use both pieces of the puzzle to get a much clearer picture of the work at hand. I personally wouldn't mind a bit more time in anime to be spent on worldbuilding, as it's often the case that any issues with the adaptation in question is actually the lack of proper worldbuilding (and it's somewhat like a "go read the source" situation if you want to know more). Execution is definitely key most of the time, as there can be series like Hellsing which are quite fantastic, both in anime and manga forms, but the anime is executed a bit poorly compared to the manga or its subsequent Hellsing Ultimate release, thus bringing it down a bit for me.

I can't say I really agree with them being equal, but I understand your perspective. They all have different strengths and attractions that will vary from person to person.

KonoSuba is certainly an enjoyable series. I always found Kazuma to be one of the most relatable characters, as I would see myself reacting or responding to things the same way as him multiple times (though not so much with how he acts towards the girls). I'm really hoping for a third season, though I hope Studio Deen puts more effort into the animation for that season because KonoSuba 2 was a mess.

In terms of seiyuu, in no particular order and mentioning my favorite performances of theirs, I really like Kana Hanazawa (assorted; Raphiel of Gabriel Dropout), Daisuke Ono (assorted; Jotaro Kujo of Stardust Crusaders), Aoi Yuuki (assorted; Tanya Degurechaff of Youjo Senki), Takehito Koyasu (Dio Brando of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Luke Valentine of Hellsing), Unshou Ishizuka (Jet Black of Cowboy Bebop), Joseph Joestar of Stardust Crusaders), Romi Park (Ragyou Kiryuuin of Kill la Kill), Atsuko Tanaka (Motoko Kusanagi of Ghost in the Shell), Lisa Lisa of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Aya Hirano (assorted; Lucy Heartfilia of Fairy Tail), Mutsumi Tamura (Kobayashi-san of Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid), Sayaka Ohara (Erza Scarlet of Fairy Tail), Kappei Yamaguchi (L of Death Note, Inuyasha of Inuyasha), Ami Koshimizu (Ryuuko Matoi of Kill la Kill, Kallen Stadtfeld of Code Geass), Kenta Miyake (Mohammed Avdol of Stardust Crusaders, All Might of Boku no Hero Academia), and Jun Fukuyama (Lelouch Lamperouge of Code Geass) just to name a few.

Okay, that was a bit more than a few, but I like to appreciate good seiyuu when I hear them.

I would say that I prefer anime to manga and light novels both, but I still try to enjoy each medium since they all can bring something new to the table. Anime are usually the best since they're able to weave in additional elements such as sound, movement, and voice acting that's generally left to the mind. Of course, they fall behind their source material when they execute these various elements poorly, but such is an inherent flaw of the medium.

The same attitude towards purchasing manga also applies to me, as I would much rather have a physical copy because I like the aesthetic and personal achievement of libraries. With that being said, as I mentioned with Gintama, sometimes it's not even possible to acquire said manga, therefore it must be read online. The same has applied to [i]Hellsing[i] and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run, two of my all-time favorite manga, as the former is no longer in print and the latter has never been here in the West.

Unfortunately, I haven't read as many light novels as I probably should have. Where I think anime are superior to manga,, I then consider manga superior to light novels in that sort of pecking order since the added visuals of the mangaka (or illustrator's) art really help support the text. The only LN I currently own physically is Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!, though this November I plan to add Youjo Senki to that list when it is released here. I own a few others digitally that I haven't gotten into yet.

I cannot recommend it enough. It's a series that changes so drastically between parts yet retains its sense of familiarity and excitement throughout. I wasn't aware that my boy Sugita played a character in Nichibros, so I'm more encouraged to actually watch that series. The same with Assassination Classroom. I can definitely agree there are few seiyuu as good as he is.

Hiya! No worries, hope all is well with your studies.

Gintama is quite the impressive series, as just like you mentioned its able to utilize the elements of a variety of genres to make it that enjoyment experience that was yielded millions of fans worldwide. The ability to go from silly to deep to exciting is quite incredible and few long-running series can genuinely claim to do all of that so well. I truly wish the manga was available here in the West so that I'd be able to enjoy that as well, but it seems like it's just something that's centralized in Japan for the time being. Many I can find some of the scans online and read it that way. I've noticed you don't have it on your manga list, but do you know anything about it?

Tomukazu Sugita is indeed a fantastic voice actor. I think he is particularly notable for how well he is able to capture various emotions, whether it be boredom, irritation, excitement, so on. Plus, I just like the sound of his voice in general. Hearing him in this season's Aho-Girl as A-Kun is pretty funny. I know most folks associate him with Gintoki, but I've always heard him as Joseph Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I've noticed that you haven't seen that, so I have to go ahead and get my full recommendation out of the way, if not just to her Sugita's performance alone. I would envision Joseph as a much wackier version of Gintoki, if that helps any.

Hello there, my dude.

I saw your post on the introductory forums and would like to offer my belated welcome to the site! I think you seem like a pretty cool fellow from your profile, and I respect a lot of your positive and pro-enjoyment attitudes. If you'd like someone to chat or discuss things with, I am your man.

We also share a decent amount of series, some of which we don't necessarily prioritize the same but have to discuss. I really should get further along in Gintama, especially since I also share a high appreciation of Gintoki and Tomokazu Sugita such as yourself.

Looking forward to hearing back from you!
