I am an avid anime watcher and manga reader. I can enjoy almost any genre or category of anime, books, movies, music, etc. to some extent if the work is good in its own context. I'm a huge sucker for great soundtracks paired with expansive landscapes.
( As of May 2017 I REALLY NEED TO UPDATE THIS. I've reformed my rating system so that I make full use of scores from 1-10. The scores still tend to skew upwards due to my previous 5-10 rating that I had before. My current rating system generally follows MAL guidelines. So 1-4 is basically really bad to bad. 5 is meh/ kinda still bad but not offensively so. 6 isn't great, but it's not the worst. Bland and inoffensive describes this. From 7-10 we get to the good stuff. 7 is good but not much more than just good. Jump from 7-8 is relatively large in terms of quality. 8-10 constitutes all anime from.really good, all the way to effing amazing, all time favorite, masterpiece, etc.
Also I've found that my opinions on anime can change dramatically upon re-watch. I've been contemplating not scoring any anime that haven't been re-watched within the last year.
~Nov. 2016 ~ I NEED TO UPDATE THIS. I pretty much just rate stuff on a whim at this point, but all the stuff I wrote below are rough guidelines.)
As for how I rate animes, my bottom rating for most anime I've watched is a 5 with the top obviously being a 10. As for why I do this, I honestly don't really know, I guess I just prefer a 1-5 (correction 1-6 scale since scale 5-10 comprises 6 numbers) over a 1-10 scale.
Anyway, that being said, my average anime rating is about a 7.
As you might be able to tell, I'm probably a little too kind with my ratings. I might rate something an 8 even when I really think it deserves like a 7.2 or something.
Anything from 6 and below is essentially crap, and I probably forced myself to watch it (I like the feeling of finishing an anime, whether I liked it or not. Trying to break that habit and drop more crappy anime.)
A 7 for me is a sub-par anime, though it still manages to be somewhat enjoyable. Essentially, I don't hate it, but I would be fine if I had never watched it.
8 and above is an anime I definitely enjoy though it still has flaws. It could also be a comedy type anime that I really enjoy (I cap out most of the comedy or SoL type anime I've watched at an 8 simply because 9s and 10s for me should not just be enjoyable but have some real impact as well).
9 would be a great anime with a few flaws. Probably had some sort of minor impact on me. The best way to describe it would be that an anime rated a 9 would cause me to reflect and consider the work more than a run of the mill anime would. Additionally, anime that inspires nostalgia for me often make the cut for a 9 even if they are not particularly great works of art. For example, One Piece makes the cut even though the anime isn't mind-blowingly great (I also love the manga so that might bump it up a little). Also anime that have a great soundtrack (like One Piece) and stunning OPs and EDs are usually higher up on my list.
10 is a truly fantastic anime. Something I thoroughly enjoy from top to bottom. Something I can relate to and leaves a lasting impact. Maybe the anime causes philosophical musings or is just simply awe-inspiring. Whatever it may be, any anime with a 10 will have left a lasting impact on me. In terms of technical aspects, a 10 will certainly have a good OST, OPs, EDs, etc. also eye-catching animation. Also the plot is allowed to have as many holes as Swiss cheese, as long as I don't notice those plot holes or discrepancies while I'm watching it. An anime that engages you so much that it causes you to truly suspend disbelief has to be a great anime. A 10 should also have a storyline that flows consistently in terms of the themes and character progression. An anime that feels clunky and disjointed usually is not a pleasure to watch.
Now that I've said all this, most of the time, I don't even think about the criterion I've set out here at all. In the end it comes down to my own personal enjoyment of the series that determines its rank most of all.
That's mine too. I love how pretty much every side character had their own arcs and its themes regarding human nature and individuality vs collectivism really appealed to be. Plus Meruem is one of the absolute best villains anime has to offer.
I'd recommend giving this a read. It's a pretty great analysis of the arc.
I am sorry to say I haven't seen too too many movies so I'm not the greatest to ask there, but taking the less obvious type of route, since your interests seem similar and you wanted to try something a little older, Black Cat I feel would be a strong recommendation to give you.. and a slightly easier route is I noticed you haven't watched Nichijou but are planning to. Absolutely watch it, and soon.

I haven't read many action mangas, but I really liked this one a lot. This has a very good mix of action and psychological elements
paired with good comedy and slight hints of romance ( that the anime lacked a bit ). Plus, the characters aren't all high schoolers,
which I though would be refreshing. I know this is a bit on the popular side, but since you have read very little, I though it'd be
good for beginners. It has good quality, and the art is good. Plus looking at your list, you seem to like shounen actions too, so
you might like it. It has minimum to no ecchi scenes, and its still on-going. The story might seem slow to you though. Good luck!
Enjoy ♥

I'm not that opinionated, really. My opinions change all the time. They just tend to be rather fringe, whatever they are. I do have great plans. I will someday be the Führer of a new Anime Reich. Await me.

Just read your review and found your story very interesting how Welcome to the NHK connects to each of us... Sorry, for your loss and I really wished that your friend could have seen this anime before he committed suicide. It could have saved his life. This anime was so relateable to me and I just cannot underestimate the effects it had on my life. It could have been very well the anime that stopped me from completely collapsing due to depression as it made me view life in a different outlook in life. Chronic depression is tough and I still suffer from it now, though I am recovering slowly through looking life in a more possible manner.
People are only giving the score for 10 based on the 4 episodes so far, it could still change depending on where the anime goes :P
and besides acting like a 29 year old in a 8 year old body would be stupid. He is still trying to pretend what he was like in the past cause a massive sudden in change in personality would be kind of odd for all those around him, also if we did know how his time travel worked in would be predictable but all this is my just opinion of the anime anyway :)

Yeah, HxH was phenomenal. What was your favourite arc btw?
Thanks for the compliments, and of course for reading my works.
