I didn't know I was watching anime at a young age. Throughout my childhood titles like Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh were big parts of my life. However in Fall 2006, when I entered high school (14 years old), I discovered the manga section in my school library and picked-up one piece. At the time, the library only had 10 volumes available. Once I finished reading them, a friend of mine told me that I could find the rest of the chapters online. It was at that moment where I was opened up to a whole new library.
Reading wasn't my forte, so on Dec 4, 2006 I chose to watch One Piece. During the Christmas break, averaging around 10-15 episodes a day, I caught up with all 290 episodes before the new year. At the start of the new school term, my friends were talking about a new hip anime airing at the time, Death Note. It was then that I learned that more titles existed past the big 3 (One Piece, Naruto and Bleach). For the next two years I continued to watch many great titles such as: Code Geass, Katekyo Hitman Reborn!, School Rumble and Gintama
Like I mentioned earlier and as you can tell from my manga list, I would rather watch than read. Unfortunately, there were many times anime I enjoyed ended abruptly with no sequels in sight and I was forced to turned to the manga to find out what happened next. The first two manga that I started reading online as a result were Claymore and Full Metal Alchemist (of course they made Brotherhood later on) in Summer 2007. Later on, I picked up some titles that would most likely not have anime adaptions such as Yankee-kun to Megane-chan and Yotsuba to!. Unlike anime, I don't usually keep up with the latest installments and reading manga tends to be more sporadic.
My love for anime still exists but has decreased in the more recent years. Primarily as a result of lifestyles changes. Graduating from university, entering the workforce and spending time with friends online and offline has decreased the amount of free time I have. I still keep up with a few seasonal titles and binge watch during long weekends. All in all, I am glad that anime has become part of my life and still is to this day.
