they're all based on the novel, and its original author wrote the story of the manga. The anime exists within the halfway point between both different stories. This explains why the "mouse road" arc introduced characters who never went anywhere in the anime. The novel is closer to the first half and conclusion of the anime, while containing more Misaki characterization and a much better ending. It's ending is basically the same as the anime, but there's like 1 episode worth of extra content taking place the same night as the cliff incident. The manga is totally different and the mouse road characters become very important and its ending is different but a dramatic powerhouse. While both versions are great, they also contain lots of drug use (alluded to in the anime by the talking furniture) and also creepy loli stuff with yamazaki if you see where they were trying to go with that in the anime. There's also a "sequel" novel from its original creator, but it's not even worth reading, feels like an effortless cash-in. Coincidentally, Tatsuhiko Takimoto is active on Instagram so you can directly message him and possibly get a response.
