10- Masterpieces. Of course, nothing can be objectively perfect, but I consider these anime to be some of the best individual examples of fictional media that I have seen. To be considered for a 10, an anime has to have had an incredible storyline/compelling characters/beautiful animation, have had a strong and lasting emotional impact on me as a viewer, and/or significantly shaped the way that I've viewed the genre.
9- Amazing. There's no other word for it. There is typically a minor flaw in the anime that keeps it from being a ten, but I've still found immense enjoyment in these and would recommend them to anyone.
(E.g. Great Pretender, Kaguya-sama: Love is War?, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Made in Abyss, Assassination Classroom, Death Note)
8- Great. Since I have a somewhat lower standard compared to more seasoned anime viewers, I tend to rate shows I enjoy relatively highly. Ergo, this is where most of my entries fall. I don't think that they are the best out there, but I think that they are perfectly fine series in their own right and are good for rewatches.
(E.g. Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches, Gurren Lagann, Psycho-Pass, Cells at Work)
7- Good. Alright. These are typically reserved for the series that I personally enjoyed, but acknowledged are not the greatest. I'd still recommend shows from here. Around here is also where the series or shows didn't have a lot of problems, there just wasn't enough material to warrant a high score (like specials or OVAs).
6- Okay. Better than average, but not particularly memorable. There's typically a bunch of small flaws or one glaring flaw that take away from the immersion. They're still fine, but I'd recommend other series over these.
(E.g. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, AnoHana, Kiznaiver)
5- Average. Perfectly middle of the road. These series are neither groundbreaking nor horrendous. Here there's typically something that makes the series hard to watch and/or take seriously, but I don't outright hate them. This is also where series that personally did not interest me at all go, as well as things like recaps/commercials (since there isn't anything good/bad to say about them).
4- Bad. Here, the flaws overtake anything the anime has that might be good. They're either memorable for the wrong reasons or completely forgettable.
(E.g. Hamatora, MagiPro, Classroom of the Elite)
3- Awful. These shows become physically painful to sit through. Whether it's bad characters, awful writing, terrible pacing, logic/plot inconsistencies, poor quality (like animation, art direction, cinematography, etc.), these series have too many problems for me to conscionably recommend to someone else.
(E.g. Future Diary, Btooom!, Tokyo Ghoul: Root A)
2- Horrible. There is almost only one redeeming factor in the anime that keeps it from being a one. Not even good animation and music can save these trainwrecks. At this point, I actively discourage other people from wasting their time watching these.
(E.g. Charlotte *blech*)
1- Bottom of the Barrel. This is reserved for only the truly terrible. You'll almost never see anything here because I can recognize what would belong here and avoid watching it. Most of the time, these series are so bad that 2s seem like masterpieces by comparison. What also goes here are shows that from a technical standpoint were not bad, but were grossly thematically offensive to me.
(Babylon, a.k.a. incoherent suicide apologism)
Completed with no score means that I've watched it, but can't remember why I liked or disliked it. I will likely rewatch it at some point to refresh my memory.
