I see. Interesting. Thanks for explaining it to me!

Why don't you have any fav characters?
DemonKingRavan Jul 21, 2016 2:02 PM
Well thank you for illuminating the connection for me.
DemonKingRavan Jul 21, 2016 1:48 PM
Firstly, as my breakdown of the scores would explain. I gave it a 6 because I liked the animation as well as the characterization of the straw hats.

Second, I had no difficulty in understanding what the story was about, I just failed to see a connection with One Piece Film: Gold. A connection that I am hoping the movie will make clear in the near future.

And lastly, I do not think an adequate explanation is given as to where and how Nami gets the vivre card to Gran Tesoro. If memory serves me correct she just produces the envelope containing the card at the end of the episode and says that everyone can go there to have a good time. And if at the end of the day all you needed to show is that Straw Hats end up at a casino island to have a good time, I hardly think it worthwhile to dedicate an entire TV special for it.

There is desperation in Saitama's action, hence the meteor incident.

I'm not so dumb to expect seriousness from OPM, but it gave us anyway (the meteor incident, the sea king, Boros) It is not my fault if the show built itself dramatically to the point we would see some struggle in it. Sorry, but that's how I see it. Mind you, I did acknowledge the things Saitama did in my review, but how it told its story is what irked me. I don't see the point in stretching the sea king arc for two episodes just to make a statement. I don't see the point in expanding the mad scientist's past in the earlier episodes (forgot what it was). If the drama is meaningless, why bother creating some?

Then again, I welcome clarifications.

Ehi, long time no see! How are you doing? :)

You see, that's the whole problem. Just because the writer made up some rules doesn't mean we have to accept them. Sure, sometimes things happen by accident, but does it mean the story is good because it's right in THAT particular world's context?

I mean, if Toriyama wanted, he could've let Frieza die of cancer or something, but nobody wants that. It's very lame to make up excuses as you please, when story elements won't go your way. If you make up rules, stick to it, instead of adjusting it. Like I said, I can't give you specific examples, but I'm sure you had these situations where you were like: wow, isn't that convenient /sarcasm.

If you really want me to give examples, I'd be willing to reread some chapters, but I'm sure you can think of it themselves. The whole wishing thing is so vague sometimes, it reminds me of Fairly Odd parents. What constitutes one wish for example? Sometimes, all dead friends can be revived, but that's also one wish. Sometimes Shen Long is very strict. Like I said, I've got no specific examples, but you know what I mean.

It is in fact an existantial question. I mean, that's all what Naruto was living for, to become a hokage, but all of the sudden, he realizes it's not JUST about becoming hokage, but WHY one should become a hokage, and is what he does right?

I wouldn't say the patriotic speech plagued the manga, you can say that of every shounen then. You might as well say that DB is all about "protecting earth of those alien scum", so that's quite a non-argument. That's just how shounen goes, protecting things that are dear to the protagonist. I don't understand how you can be so harsh to Naruto, but not to DB. As if Goku isn't sheltered and naive. All he does is fight and fight, and he doesn't necessarily even do it for the good of people. He simply enjoys fighting, and doesn't question whether what he does is good or not. How is beating up people for fun good in anyway? And when he finally beat the shit out of opponents, we have just have to automatically assume he's a good guy when he lets people live. Does he even consider his actions? He beat the bloody pulp out of Frieza, then lets him live because he FELT like letting him leave, not considering his own actions, nor the consequences that might follow after he let such a villain continue his ravage.

In fact, letting Frieza live bothered the main protags in later chapters too (yes I know his father saved him in theory, but still). All those arguments you say about Naruto might as well apply to DB, in triple.

>But those moments are always hard to analyse, because you have to wonder who is answering, if the character itself or the author, so for Naruto to answer was unnatural, and that opened the window for this whole thing with the Infinite Tsukuyomi...

Why should it matter? I don't think it does not fit the role of Naruto to be unable to answer. He lived his whole life believing in something, but that belief got crushed. You said that's a bad thing, but why? It's interesting to see how a character reflects on his own actions, and a bad situation does not mean a bad story. It's as people say that EVA is a bad anime because Shinji is an annoying whining wuss. Just because a character is SUPPOSED to be annoying does not mean the character is annoying, as a story element.

Naruto being unable to answer does not mean the whole story is naive, it's Naruto being naive, and having a change in heart at that moment. He tries to question his own action and see how he can change it in the future. If you ask me, that's a very brave and interesting plot. I won't discuss how it changed AFTER that, because I agree it totally sucks, I hate how the whole friendship is mended in one single chapter. But I just wanted to discuss that specific part to show you how Kishimoto dares to break the fourth wall a bit, whereas slightly older manga are more conservative. I'll leave out stuff like Devilman and Astroboy, because you're giving pretty good examples and I agree.

I was just talking about the mainstream stuff that appears in Shounen Jump, which DB happens to be a part of. I notice a trend where mainstream manga try to explain themselves more, and I like this trend if it isn't over-pretentious. I mean, even Devilman is quite short on words and actions happen way to fast. They'd try to explain a situation or an idea in a few panels or text bubble, which is typical Japanese. Japanese tend to approach characters in a stereotypical way, very showy, very extravagant, you need to understand things as quick as possible. Look at the villain, and you need to understand he is a villain. In that sense, even smart thoughts get dumbed down, and that was a problem I had with Astroboy. They say very intelligent things, but tone it down because they try to convey it as fast and clear as possible. Some ideas need pacing to have the impact be as big as possible. It needs time to seep into your mind.

Western comics on the other hand try to explain every motivation, every reason why things happen, and I guess sometimes it works better. One of the reason why I love manga and anime is because of the exaggaration of everything. There is simply no limit, and it allows fantasy to bloom. Sometimes it works in its own favor, sometimes it's shooting itself in the foot. For example, I won't question a lot of things because it's magic and it's just manga, but then they would often try to explain themselves, pulling me out of the story. When they try to explain things, I would get really analytical, and I question a lot of things. When DB try to explain their rules, I think: Oh, THAT'S what you're worrying about, what about the other plothole you conveniently ignored? So, in order to prevent that, authors should just stick to one thing. Either they write a lot of rules and stick to it, either they stay dumb and act like a brainless shounen.

About Naruto rushing, I definitely think so. I had the feeling that Kishimoto had a lot of things up his sleeves when he met Killer Bee. Around those arcs, things got interesting, and interesting characters got introduced. The group Sasuke was working with seemed interesting. The whole Karin got betrayed by Sasuke, and getting affection from Sakura and Naruto seemed like it would've lead to more. But for some reason, Kishimoto tries to rush to an end and killed off all the precedents he set up himself! Maybe some sort of contract ending came up? Maybe he got sick of his own manga? I really don't know what he's been thinking lately.

This one particular chapter really shocked me, the one where Orochimaru gathers everyone and explain stuff to Sasuke. All of the sudden, Sasuke became the good guy and everything is forgiven. Karin suddenly rushes out to Sasuke while we haven't seen her for months. It was simply ridiculous. There are so many things left unhandled. What's Naruto's respond to Hinata, after finding out she has feelings for him? I know it's unrealistic to have these issues sorted out during a war, but why Kishimoto start a war and tries to end the manga when all these stuff are open questions?

This isn't working for me either, because Naruto has a place in my heart. I pretty much started anime with Naruto, and I still think the earlier chapters very marvelous, even animation-wise. Nowadays, there are some chapters I dig, and some chapters I totally hate, and I think it's because some ideas were thought of way before hand (I think he made up the main story from the beginning already, considering he has many reoccurring characters and foreshadowing). Those foreshadowed elements are his strongest trumps. I think his weakest plots are those he made up on the fly, because he's trying to rush the manga. That's why sometimes I really like Naruto, and sometimes I despise it. But that's just a theory.

I have read 'Fraction' - and I did not like it that much. Its structure was interesting and refreshing and the perspectives were good and surprising - at its end. But the beginning and the middle was boring for me. And it wasn't that good visually I like the other works of the author better.

BUT I loved 'Heaven's door'. So thanks a lot for mentioning Koike Keiichi's works in the 'Unusual is Better-club'!:)

If you don't mind a question: Is it Baka-Updates good for making a manga-list? To be more precise: Is it better than MAL?:)

Rori says:
1&2 It is an echo of things that no longer exist.
3 It is fiction so don't think about it much
Alas86 Aug 7, 2012 1:18 PM
Well if you want my opinion, he got banned simply because he was being too pushy and many people complained about him. The bosses here wouldn't tolerate someone annoying their userbase, even if there were merits in his conduct. Unfortunately rori just can't let go.

Anyway, you are welcome and yes it can be a bit annoying to act as an intermediary, but oh well, what can I do.
You can reply to his profile still though, he would see it there. I'll deliver your comment to him this time, but just for possible future reference.

Roriconfan is banned from mal for his negative reviews, so he asked me to reply in his stead.

1&2. There is no travel to the past if you see it like replaying a movie recording or looking at a photo.
3. There is only one universe. Alternatives are just excuses for lousy sci-fi movies.
4. Good and evil have nothing to do with progress towards death.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
