Hi there,
Welcome to the blank space that is my own Anime List. It's pretty messy.
Anyways, the main reason for its existence is not actually for keeping track of my series (I have a separate list for that), but more for contributing to some of the ratings that give others an idea of what one should or shouldn't watch (Either way, that shouldn't always be a deciding factor, right?).
I believe that the MAL ratings for most series are skewed one way or another, but they are generally quite an accurate showing of how a series has fared. It's a pity that we can't label to one decimal place, because there are often times when my opinion of a series falls in between integers. Either way, below is a rough gauge for how my ratings go:
1-4: Why was time and money wasted making this trash... was there even any effort put into this? (Even if the intent was to troll all of us...)
5: Expectations severely below par; I somehow finished it through some otherworldly willpower, but seriously, don't make the same mistake. Go do better things with your time.
6: Expectations below par; not recommended, a waste of time but still watchable.
7: Expectations matched; ok to watch. Nothing special but also nothing terrible. Time not necessarily wasted.
8: Expectations matched and more; good to watch. Would recommend. Time well-spent. Low likelihood of rewatching.
9: Expectations exceeded; would highly recommend. Time very well-spent. Possibly worth rewatching.
10: Expectations way exceeded; must-watches, masterpieces even. Very worth rewatching.
As you can see, mine are based on expectations; they are entirely subjective to my enjoyment of the show. I don't tend to watch anime with the intention of reading too deeply into it (unless it invites me to, for better or worse), so my impressions don't tend to step too far out. If an anime falls into the 1-4 category... I feel sorry for everyone who watched it and question what happened in the studio for them to produce such miserable trash. Most animes in MAL wouldn't even step anywhere near that region and out of respect for the artists working on it, I'd rather not classify any anime as such. But there are some animes which just prove the law of averages and end up being abysmal abominations (even if they were obviously trolling and yes I'm looking at you, Mars of Destruction).
I also do not really rewatch shows. As earlier stated, there are too many things to do and too little time. However, there are some series which may truly be worthy of a rewatch when the time is right, and those series would either be bona fide anime classics or those that score a 9 or 10. Some rewatches may also be because I feel that a series is worthy of a relook, given the prolonged passage of time and evolutions in my thinking and viewpoints.
Either way, I do write a review or two (even though they may not be great by MAL helpfulness standards). When I do that's usually because I actually have something to say about the show in particular (which I sometimes feel has not been said just yet). I also read lots of manga but I don't feel inclined to include them here on MAL at this point.
[2020 edit note: Since I now have a lot less time than I used to, I have realised that ratings make for a filter of sorts. Since I typically follow the season however, I purposely lag behind the season by about 2-4 weeks to see how other people have viewed the show. Nowadays, I also find myself being more ruthless in how I can drop a series when I feel it may score a 7 or lower. Nonetheless, there are many times when an anime that starts out ok/great ends up crashing, and many others when an anime that starts not-so-great turns out to be excellent. My system has me losing out on those that fall in the latter category, but since time is paramount, I don't typically pick up on missed gems from a previous season.]
While this is mainly for my selfish means, I hope my little list and review opinions would be of some use~

Also, I read your Hibike review--really well put on all points.
I am also in constant watch over KyoAni's anime, personally because I admire Yamada Naoko (Director of K-ON) and always looking forward for her next anime. Then Hibike came, with both Ishihara Tatsuya and Yamada Naoko featured. So I can't help but having a great expectation. Turns out even my highest expectation is surpassed with every single detail they put in this anime. KyoAni just raised their already high standard, and this is indeed their best anime so far.
It makes me happy to see people properly appreciate this anime for its quality.
NB: That mysterious Reina. Didn't she make you wonder what she would do or say everytime she showed up? ;)
[a little early but I don't want to miss it]
And something about cache and cookies, I'm not sure. It does that to me on my phone and I don't know how to fix it =/
