Thanks for the compliment! I pretty much said this type of thing multiple times before haha. I'm pretty sure I can make a pretty good but totally biased review of it if I put my mind into it :^)
I played the visual novel of Clannad shortly after I watched the series. I can say for a fact that everything was properly adapted and both Tomoyo's and Kyou's ovas were better off alone. Because of the their arcs involved early romance unlike Fuko's and Kotomi's arc, it made sense to make it an "alternate universe". I liked Tomoyo's arc way more then Kyou's arc because I felt like Tomoya stayed true to his character. Idk maybe I preferred him waiting a year for a girl over "practice kissing" with someone's twin sister haha. Of course I loved Nagisa's story and innocent personality even more. She despite her "weak" character gave emotional support to Tomoya and wanted to see everyone happy the best way she can. Tomoyo is independent already (which is always nice) but I felt her plot progression focused more on her while not really answering Tomoya's development outside of a delinquent's relationship with the student counsel president. I know its biased but After Story just showed how much of a match each of them are and I admit that I loved the ending in Tomoyo's OVA too.
If you really like Tomoyo's character then I would suggest you play her stand alone visual novel. I haven't played it myself but it was made by popular demand (and it has some h-scenes in it). Just... throwing it out there.
I absolutely love the Clannad series even after watching hundreds of anime after it, it is still my top favorite. It was like the 5th subbed anime I watch and it really made me want to enjoy more of what anime had.
Animation for 2008 is very beautiful, every character had some story (even minor supports) that makes you attached to them in some way like a real person, lots of life lessons, great memorable music (dango song), and of course it brought in the feels. Outside of other shows except like FMA Brotherhood, I haven't been immersed in a fictional universe and felt the same feelings like the characters at that moment. At times I saw Tomoya Okazaki as a bro and rooted for him when he was doing a challenge and sympathized with his struggles as I seen him "grow up".
I think anime are great if they legitimately draw in the audience's attention with their strongest points which in Clannad's case was the characters and the slice of life romantic drama setting.
