Bokutachi ga Yarimashita must be one of the "best" pieces of literature put on paper. A manga about contrast, a story that could only be described as an unpredictable, blazing 87-chapter long car crash briming with brilliant satire, dark humor, and memorable characters. A car crash so fucked-up, you cannot look away.
This manga expertly balances between parody and the dark, ugly side of human beings. This contrast, I believe, is best expressed through the story’s characters. Their interactions with one another, their reactions to situations that challenge their morality, their greed, lust, anger, or simply their blatant and undeniable idiocy. As sad as it
...
is to admit I found myself relating to the characters in this story quite a lot. I saw many similarities in the “fuck it, lets have fun” mentality of the characters with myself and my own group of friends back in high school. The characters in this story are far from perfect, they make mistakes, say dumb shit and act like troglodytes. But in return the characters feel like real people, so much so, that I swear I’ve known people like this in real life.
The most subjective aspect of this manga, something that can make or break your enjoyment with it, is the comedy. Even though it may seem like most of the time the author is simply drawing silly faces and ridiculous situations to make scenes more comedic. I would argue that it goes deeper than that. I believe the true comedy of this manga stems from the contrast between the situation that the characters are in, and their reactions to it. It is completely nonsensical. Characters react to horrible, depressing, borderline traumatic situations with such lightheartedness that it is impossible not to find it at least a bit funny.
The art is quite unique. It looks more realistic than most manga. And I believe this also helps with the comedy aspect of this manga. It makes the ridiculous comedy scenes filled with dark humor hit even harder.
This manga quickly became one of my favorites, it probably does not deserve a 10/10 but fuck it. I had such a good time reading it I cannot help but love it.
