I mean to be fair, there were older Magical Girl series called Princess Tutu and Revolutionary Girl Utena that also had the appearance of magical girl show with darker themes. Utena covered a lot more hardball issues in a similarly trippy way with a bit less bombast and more time for every character. Princess Tutu is a great example of a focused narrative that appropriately balances the dark and light parts of itself, in a dreamlike/stage show like way, in constrast to MSS which has no concept of proper tone since the comedy use is so jarring that it takes you out of the experience. If you haven't seen either Tutu or Utena I would highly recommend both.

That was essentially my point. I brought up all those examples to say that when something hits the big time, there will inevitably be a lot of copycats, and even if the copycats aren't as blatant as MSS, they will often be marketed SPECIFICALLY to that audience based on their appreciation for that other, popular thing, not its own merits.

Pretty much. It's so unimportant MAL doesn't even have a picture for it lol.

A combination of both. Mostly because I was just appalled by how much utter contempt it had for concepts like tone, effort, characterization, plot structuring, originality, battle animation, and proper integration of dark themes into the narrative. It was even only made an anime because they wanted to promote the idol group IRIS. As a series, everything about it reeks of laziness, edge, idiocy and fetish randomness.

I mean, I'm sure that is neat and all, to hear Kizuna AI but she voices a totally not scary figure on the cardboard cutout council of emotionless evil. And as someone who's way more able to remember an English voice than any Japanese one, I couldn't tell you which one was her.

Also, to contrast my positive Madoka review. But thank you for reading
