Just in case you come back to check stuff, including comment section:
Thanks so much for the Escaflowne review. Right now, I'm halfway through and do plan to complete it. While I do kinda like the designs of the mechas and the scenery, as well as the music...the story and the characters just utterly frustrate me on a personal level.
What characterization? These characters are just walking around with sticks up their asses, and any comedy implemented is as dry as chapped lips on chilly, windy days.
There's more I could say, but I'll stop there LOL.
Doesn't look like you're very active on MAL anymore but I have to say your Escaflowne review was one of the funniest and most satisfying reads I've had in a long time. What a shitshow. Good work man.
MY god, dude. Honestly, I loved Escaflowne. As an animator, I usually look past most flaws with anime because I get how hard it is to actually make one that's decent AND consistent. But holy shit, did I relate to that review. I mean seriously, wtf was that dumbass fucking dilandau? I think the only flaws I really saw in this anime were in the writing and characters. Artistically I felt like I was watching anime never-ending-story, and the soundtrack is fantastic. But goddamn dude, you made the perfect summary of all the bullshit in the writing. I laughed my ass off. Fucking dilandau should've died in the first 5 episodes, or at least demoted or fired for being a completely useless dumbass the whole time lmao.
I probably should have read your review about Escaflowne before watching the show, but I always try to not spoil myself. I was even going to make a review on it because all the "shitty plots" and stupid stuff bothered a lot in the second half.
I'm actually surprised that you didn't mention Hitomi that much in the review because she was a total useless bitch 90% of the show. She started alright, had a crush on Amano boy, then she met Allen and developed a crush on him as well, because he looked like Amano, and until the last episodes she finally realises she "loves" Van, just for the show to end on each one going to their separated places...it's very, very stupid. Not to mention her "power" to predict future, or change it (still didn't grasp all that shit well). She pretty much decided to joke around with everyone future when the princess asks for her "readings" just because she didn't want that Allen and that princess to get together. I don't know if she did have an impact in this, but that way the Anime represented it, and what Van's Mother said when they were in Atlantis pretty much made that scene looks like that it was her fault. All her nagging on "stop fighting....stop fighting" in the middle of a fucking fight, where if you stop for a second you die was the most frustrating in the show...holy shit.
Anyways, nice review man. It just didn't mention all the stupid stuff this show has, specially Hitomi. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It was very annoying. I only risked it because I like this older Anime with that Animation, the soundtrack was good, and there are a lot of famous voice actors in it, also the studio is a good one as well. Let's hope the movie is better.
