What I'm into
- Mecha. Especially Gainax mecha. Slightly under a third of my 10/10 ratings currently belong to a mecha show.
- Comedy. I enjoy a good laugh. Nichijou and Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou are 2 of my favorite shows.
- Slice of Life. Not necessarily moe, though; I don't personally care for moe, but if a SoL has something besides moe to offer, I'll eat it right up. I think it's interesting to note that two of my top 5 shows are SoL; none of the other genres I list here (besides psychological) can claim that.
- Psychological. I haven't watched too much in this genre, but I've greatly enjoyed what I've seen from it so far.
How I rate shows
My rating system is primarily based on personal enjoyment. I don't personally believe it's possible to objectively rate a show; it's possible to objectively point out things like plot holes and poor animation, but I don't think it's possible to quantify something like enjoyment into some sort of objective scale. So I rate on the only enjoyment I can quantify for certain - my own.
Things like animation quality, voice acting, soundtrack quality, and so on and so forth are still things I take into consideration, mind you, but I feel that personal enjoyment outweighs other possible factors in rating a show. At least for a personal list; if I were a critic getting paid to write reviews, technical quality would play a larger role in my ratings.
But for me, my MAL list is a record of not necessarily which shows were the most technically impressive, but for the ones I enjoyed the most. If I enjoy a show that is also a masterpiece from a technical standpoint, all the better, but rarely do I subtract points from my final rating of a show for lacking technical finesse.
Now, none of this is to say I don't think critically about the shows I watch at all - a well-written, original show is going to be more interesting and entertaining than a dull, derivative one, and I'd like to think my ratings reflect that fact in general. I can't claim to have watched much though (at least in the grand scheme of things), so my ideas and definitions of what constitutes fresh or new or different may differ somewhat from reality, but there's nothing I can do about that but continue to watch and draw new conclusions based upon the new things I watch.
Also: I don't
enjoy tearing down a work. I'm here to have a good time, after all, and the more fun I have, the better. This is a large part of why my average rating is so high compared to a lot of users here; I have a very good grasp of what I like and dislike, and just simply don't bother picking up shows I know I won't enjoy watching. Sure, sometimes I take a chance on a show and get burned, or I simply don't enjoy a show I thought I would, but I don't watch anime for the sake of padding out the
days wasted "days completed" stat on my profile. This is supposed to be a fun hobby; life's got enough troubles without arbitrarily introducing drudgery into a pastime.
My rating scale

- 10. Loved the daylights out of it. May have a minor nitpick here or there (the animation of episode 4 of Gurren Lagann comes to mind), but overall I have no complaints about this show and will definitely recommend it to anyone who asks me for general recommendations. You'll probably also catch me gushing about this show if you pay attention to me for a bit.
- 9. Enjoyed it a lot. I had some complaints about it (Five's character in Zankyou no Terror, for example), but I still enjoyed watching the show as a whole. I will definitely recommend this show to anyone who's interested in the sort of genre it tackles, and may offer it as a general recommendation on a case-by-case basis.
- 8. A fun watch. I either had considerable complaints about this show or just simply felt ambivalent throughout a nontrivial portion of it, but still greatly enjoyed certain sections of it. I'll still probably recommend this show to someone who has watched something similar, or who is simply very into the genre of the show.
- 7. Lukewarm territory. I either spotted major objective issues (somewhat serious plotholes/animation error/etc) or simply didn't find anything enjoyable in general about the show, but still found some decent enjoyment in certain areas. You probably won't see me recommending anything that I rate this high or below unless it's fulfills some kind of very specific niche someone is looking for.
- 6. "Meh" describes how I probably felt about this show. It could have had objective issues more serious than a 7 would warrant, but it's more likely that I just didn't find it all that interesting or entertaining.
- 5. This, or any rating below it, indicates I felt the show in question was largely a waste of time in the entertainment department. A show with this rating is also likely to have some serious objective issues present in it.
- 4. 5 is the lowest I will rate a show based upon enjoyment alone. Any lower rating is incurred by things such as horrible plotholes or horrible animation for the era the show was released in. A show with a rating of 4 indicates serious objective issues present within it, and you'll probably see me actively telling people not to watch anything with this rating or lower.
- 3. Common sense escaped me and I failed to take the advice of the synopsis and average rating of this show. Pretty much an out-and-out trainwreck. Don't watch this. Please.
- 2. A trainwreck among trainwrecks. How I could even think I'd enjoy something like this is beyond me.
- 1. Reserved for Mars of Destruction, whenever I get around to watching that.

btw hi
On a side note, I wish MAL kept track of VNs.
Anyway, I redid the CSS on my MAL page. Feel free to give me feedback on things you think could be done better or think should change.
I took a peek at your blogspot blog and your September 2013 entry. (I really should reread it properly at some later time given that I'm too sleepy at the moment and not being a gamer, I will need more brain processing power than my semi-sober state can provide.) Anyway, it reminded me of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FakeDifficulty >,< ... and my frustrations with Civilization Revolution DS and its cheating AI. =,= Besides Neves, CivRevDS was one of the few games I was fully enjoying until I realized the intentional anomalies that supposedly made it more challenging to human players. =,=
