Happy Birthday!

Alright, I only have two finals left to go. Given how they're t̶e̶c̶h̶n̶i̶c̶a̶l̶l̶y̶ ̶n̶o̶t̶ pretty much open-book, they're more or less just a formality at this point. Should have lots more time to chat.

i'm pretty much with you there when it comes to people, though unfortunate to hear being online doesn't help with you much. If it didn't for me, I don't think I'd have the friends I do now. Granted, the number still isn't as high as I'd like it to be, but as always, hopefully I can work on that during the summer. I'd perhaps have to counter you on thinking since this site is for anime, you wouldn't have to worry about others judging/mocking you, since that's pretty much the issue with elitists and fanboys in general. Two opposite ends of the spectrum, but both are just as shitty. And last I checked on MAL, they're around in droves. Fortunately though, if you can avoid them, then yeah I see what you mean, lol.

Sounds pretty stupid to me that MAL couldn't somehow authenticate that it was actually you. Unless you've changed locations in the last two years, they should be able to compare your IP address (or general location) of your last log-in attempt to the ones you've tried this year. But it wouldn't surprise me if it's above their pay grade, and I don't really think they give a shit at the end of the day if you're not giving them money.

Speaking of MAL being shitty, yeah the crash turned out to be quite an event that lasted way longer than it should for any half-decently operated website. The site owners could not (and sometimes still can't) get their shit together. It was completely unacceptable that it took as long as it did just to get back up and running, let alone the year or more we still had to wait for the working API. If you do make an AniList, you can find me here. This should also give you an idea of what the visuals are like, and yes, there is a dark theme. Meanwhile in MAL, they still use the eye-searing white theme that I have to correct with a Firefox extension.

Comedy is fairly subjective, so I can understand you haven't really encountered much you've enjoyed. I pretty much noticed this when I was watching Nichijou, and there were a few people that just did not care for it. I can even admit that a lot of the jokes were just lost on me, likely because they're only culturally relevant to the Japanese. That's a bit of an interesting roadblock I don't think a lot of us in the West consider when we're watching or reading material made in the East. Fortunately, Grand Blue seemed to have that universal appeal as we've mentioned. I'll be sure to look out for that specific scene you mentioned when I start watching it.

Regarding Vinland Saga being relatively dark, I think that's something that'll be a plus for me when I get around to it. Some of my favorite anime/manga are dark or have those mature themes, like Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, and Hellsing. Honestly, taking another look at my library, I don't think I got to experience enough of it.

Personal digression aside, I don't really mind the whole "badass MC" approach as long as they earn and justify their prowess. Fascinating to hear that he's complex enough to merit deep discussions, which is pretty well indicative that he is a well-written character. I can't really contribute much here since I don't know anything about him just yet, but perhaps that's something we can revisit in the future.

I always have the time. I really can't be using that as an excuse. It's mostly just a case where I have to get in the *mood* to watch it. Not sure if I've brought it up with you before, but I am in the complete opposite mindset from you. I treat anime and manga as a bit of a "win-more" activity where I only engage in it when I'm both in the clear (i.e. no other responsibilities) and in a good mood, and this combination is fairly rare. Due to some hearing issues, I've also got to get in the right situation to watch it. These are probably all excuses, but they're excuses I'm bound by nonetheless, and it explains my low progress in the two years I've been active in consuming Japanese material. I'd much rather be like you and most others in how I choose to approach things, but it can't be helped.

I don't think I'd actually mind much if there were anime-style NatGeo content, but that's just me, lol. I honestly never expected Vinland Saga to be very close to reality, so that will be a welcome surprise for me I think. I'll keep it in mind not to look up too much of the real world parallels when I watch/read it. Also, I hadn't heard of 91 Days before, but the setting you've mentioned (and I noticed after looking it up) is a surprising choice for something made in Japan. I'll take it, though. Might even add it too my ever-increasing lists.

God this is so late since I've been busy a lot during quarantine jeez but thank you for sending me a message. RE:Zero was just so good, I want to rewatch again but the feelings that the anime left me is still there. I am super hyped for season two that is coming up this summer, kind of disappointed that it was post-phoned due to COVID-19. I'm glad that there wasn't any ass-pulls like in sao, glad it stayed realistic like it should.

As far as I know, I know that some people dislike RE:Zero because the characters are a huge disappointment and Subaru is too useless? It is interesting to see a main character not OP. If I were to be him, I'd exactly be as useless as he was. His character development is one of the best I've seen. It reminds me of the main character of Erased, there he was useless too (kinda, I don't know)

Haikyuu, I've watched the 3 season a year or two ago and now with the 4th season out. I'm planning to re-watch every thing and maybe all in one go.

Damn, sorry to be so late this time. Over the past few days, I've tried to put together a reply, though I either get caught up in something else or I just forget. I'm a bit out of practice these days, since I pretty much stopped communicating like this entirely and focused mostly on Discord. Anyway, I should be much more attentive whenever the semester ends, which thankfully is fairly soon.

I do agree that it's fairly difficult to speak about anime or manga with people in person, though that's not saying much since I think it's a difficult to speak with people in general. There's a night and day difference with my personality and confidence online as it is offline, which I'm sure is the case for most people. Unfortunately, for a social person such as myself, that makes reaching out and forming connections with those in real life a massive challenge; it's much harder for those of us who like this sort of material who generally share that same social anxiety. It is nice to hear that you have things to do in person, or rather *had* for the time being. Like I might have mentioned already, things should be working to get back to normal in May with June and July hopefully feeling as things used to be. I'd like to hope people keep up the in person social distancing and hand washing, regardless.

Sorry to hear about the issue with the old account, as something like that would drive me crazy. That's been my case for a few services I can no longer access (like some older YouTube channel and my first Neopets account). As a result, I've pretty much just stuck to the same address for the last few years and probably wont change it any time soon, even though I'd much rather have a new and more personalized name than what I have. Just in case anything like this might happen again, though, I recommend getting a password manager of some kind. I personally use Bitwarden, which is free, open source, and cross-platform. There's also LastPass and Dashlane.

To answer your question, though, yeah AniList is pretty much the same sort of service that MAL is yet it's much more modern. It has its advantages and disadvantages compared to this site, as do all the other alternatives (Kitsu, Anime-Planet, etc.) but I do think it's probably the closest in terms of quality. When MAL's API had gone down back in 2017 (or 2018?), I almost entirely moved to AniList since I couldn't use any app to update my watches or reads. Right now, I try to keep both up-to-date.

Anyway, as for anime itself, I have a friend that's known for being particularly hard to please and even he enjoyed Grand Blue, so I can't think of any stronger endorsement than that. I try and shill it to any of my friends trying to get into anime or manga, similar to what I've done for Cowboy Bebop or Nichijou. It's just one of those series that has a wide enough appeal for everyone without feeling bland or substanceless as a result (cough cough unless like some that's get a god damned season one after another). As for Vinland Saga, I can't really say much since I don't have the experience that you do, but I will keep that in mind in case I do watch the anime or read the manga. A bit of a cryptic warning, though.

I genuinely have no idea where to start when I get off, since I've missed every season since like Winter 2018 (still two episodes in on Yuri Camp). There's also the long awaited JoJo Part 5 that I missed in its entirely and tried to (and failed) avoid any sort of clips or whatnot. Yet again we're at the case where there's so much to watch and so little time, and pretty much every time that happens I freeze up and don't watch anything. The cycle never ends.

As quite the historical enthusiast myself, I do understand where you're coming from in your original position. Wouldn't say I'm as much of a stickler for the facts as I am just appreciative of the references in general. The only time I take issue with adaptations or references is if they're actually trying to make a statement on the times that's just not at all valid or aptly placed, as then you're commentating on real history rather than trying to make your own version, which to me at least is a non-starter. Can't say I've seen an anime that does that yet, though. Thankfully Japan at least isn't like the West in how often it loves to "correct the record" with history.

Oh sweet, then your sister is the real hero here! I don't blame you for taking off, though. If you had thought of MAL primarily as a community, then yeah I definitely understand forgetting or losing interest. For me, that's always been a side focus since what I mostly wanted to do was track my watches/readings and commentate in general on the series. I figured you might have just lost interest in general in anime/manga, but it's good to see that's not the case.

I haven't seen much historical anime myself, but what I have, I did like, so I do think it's strange you had such an aversion towards it. But then again, the same applies to me, specifically with sports, idol, mecha, and most battle shounen, though each have had their exceptions. It's good to see you've branched out though, as it's always better to like as much as you can since that's just a net gain.

Vinland Saga is one series I've really had an interest in given my appreciation of Norse society and vikings in general, and this was way before the anime was even announced. The manga was always a bit too expensive for me, so I never did start, however things have changed since then. It's good to see the anime is living up to the hype, as that's always a risk with late adaptations. I felt kinda the same when Grand Blue got an anime, but fortunately it seems to be holding up. Probably still my second favorite manga to this day.

As for me, the real low points were late 2018 and early 2019, so fortunately that's a bit ago now. Probably the worst time in my life, but I am better now. Still not very happy in general, and there's a lot of annoyances I have to deal with daily, but one just has to move forward. It's kinda odd how I actually wanted to make an effort to go out and do things this year and then we have to get hit with some nasty virus that wasn't the meme bug I thought it was.

I have seen the memes where the shut-ins were pretty much prepared for this, and I suppose to an extent that also applies to me, lol. Some things do suck though like the inability to feel safe when you're just going out to get groceries or most things being closed. I dunno if you've been doing remote classes, but I have and honestly I don't like it one bit. I kinda liked to the little bit I did get out back when things were normal. Fortunately, this all is supposed to be clearing out by late May and mid-June, so hopefully it wont be like this for much longer. Kinda sick of staying home with my grandparents.

It really is a shame you don't have your old account anymore. It'll take some work trying to build everything back up. I don't suppose you have an AniList as well?
Valenthyne Apr 20, 2020 3:29 PM
Oof, well it's good to hear you're okay. I was actually worried and feared you might have died, given how sudden it was you left and how long it had been since. You actually came up in a conversation I was having with friends a couple weeks ago were we were talking about MAL friends that vanished, lol. Almost made it to the two year anniversary where I was going to drop another post, but here you are.

I pretty much took the same break you did but... well I never stopped. I think the last time I watched anything was actually as long ago as May 2018, and even before that I had been largely inactive since late 2017. Based on my AniList, yesterday marked one year since I'd even read any manga. Dunno why all of this is, though it's probably a combination of a lot of factors. I do miss late 2016 and early 2017 though, which was probably my prime interest. I'm hoping to maybe break the curse this summer, but I pretty much say that every summer and don't end up doing anything.

A lot has happened in the last two years though, much of it not good. I hope you're holding up during the current pandemic. Arizona seems to be among the lower risk states like mine, though it's still better to be safe.
