Have a nice day :)
This work is unique insofar as it expresses openly its Japanese right-wing views, particularly about the post WWII American cultural and military presence in Japan and the dispossession of this country's right to defend itself. These views are far from being uncommon in Japan (it is making the news theses weeks) and many authors were portraying this in a more allegorical way.
Think of Space Battleship Yamato, Godzilla, Go Nagai's Mazinger and even Evangelion.
And Takahashi masterfully worked these themes to deliver the most authentic political plot in anime (and I watched LOGH). This is why Gasaraki is considered a culturally important piece of Real Robot
The animation of the mecha is brilliantly and entirely hand-drawn. Aside from being one of the most detailed animation in mecha anime history, it is beautiful to watch. It is the opposite of laziness. I would call lazy the current extensive use of 3D to animate mecha.
And I didn't get "even for 1998". Are you one of those who confuse the advances made in coloring/computer effects with a hypothetical continuous improvement of 2D animation skills ?
I honestly recommended it. Sorry for you if you didn't enjoy it. This level of Real Robot seriousness is probably far from your preferences. In this point I think the ANN reviewer speaks better than me
“The series' biggest draw, though, is the meticulous detail it puts into its animation and depiction of mecha activities. Few other mecha titles even come close to matching this series' degree of realism and technical detail in the preparations, piloting, and missions involved with mecha operation. Here mecha synchronize laser targeting with each other, employ flying drones for data collection and coordination, use built-in winches and hydraulic pistons to hoist themselves up buildings, get dropped from planes while sitting in protective sleds, and react with appropriate difficulty in environmental hazards like storm-blown sand. The boxy mecha fit their pilots very snugly into claustrophobic cockpits and rigorously follow the laws of physics in their movements. Support personnel guide pilots' actions down to the second and meter and adjust fine operational details from minute to minute.”
