I don't know about that, the CG seemed very expressive to me, especially on a TV budget. In "Land of the Lustrous", most of the backgrounds are drawn in 2D, while Earwig went for a full 3D experience. It uses this "character stands completely still while talking" trope a lot as well, while characters constantly move around on Earwig. People just think it looks cheap and souless because it doesn't use cel-shading and looks more like moving toys. I feel that it's rather the art style than the animation itself that people don't like. I do agree that they could've done better on the lighting though, everything looks like it's made out of plastic because of how flat it is.

And about the trolling part have you even saw the reviews? Did you see his arguments for some of his shows? While some shows which clearly have alot of flaws he gives those high ratings. While he for example totally murders promised never land on little details while that show is way better executed than some of his higher ratings. But actually you're right. To each their own :)

I only watch animes that have 8 or higher to begin with. So it's not really strange for me to have an average of 8.5 right?? don't jump to conclussions.
