All good, I've been kind of busy myself but still do spend some time here and there when I am just relaxing from the lack of university work and other stuff going on, and have nothing to do. Hope you are doing well yourself, and thanks for accepting the request.
When you really get down to it, nothing is super unique after some point, especially if you look at stuff beyond japanese mediums, but Zaregoto warrants any attention it has on being one of the oldest works of a succesful and loved author and that whatever it does, still seems different enough when looked at in the vacuum of what is released in anime/manga and so on.
Yeah, the thing about the gimmicks and tricks it uses really just tells me that the series is transparent about not really being about the mysteries themselves, it wasn't hard to figure that out haha. Like the second book having the (sorta) detective of the book being kinda in on the murderer and even being so judgemental he leads to the murderer's death. Reading smth like Umineko before this with its rulings on the genre and approach really made me realize stuff like that better about Zaregoto.
And ye, you're kinda right I'm early in the series even if I'm halfway into it since the series is stacking up on anything super juicy with the characters and all for the last volumes, but that's ok. I'm just worried on whether whatever happened with Ii and Tomo is worth it in any capacity due to how much teasing there is on that.
I think the best character work from Nisio was in Monogatari for the most part, but he likes doing meta humor n satire too and other things and he's better at different aspects of his stories in different works. Monogatari has the characters, Medaka Box has the meta context and so on, Katanagatari the simple yet effective plotting and so on.
I mean, one reason it isn't as popular is because other Nisio stuff has decently popular in their time/pretty popular anime adaptations and get more people involved in the LN subforums just with that. Or you can be Medaka Box, a WSJump title and a manga so that's more involved discussion by default too lol. Zaregoto existed for a while with like half of the series translated b4 getting anything adapted and licensed by Vertical (which seems to have given up on it lmao), and then getting fully translated recently.
It also doesn't use some real popular tropes that hook people on this site like HakoMari for example. The first 3 volumes have tricks, but they're tricks in narratives that are kinda so-so or just alright and they only have real interesting stuff happening with characters besides the main plot of each book (Zerozaki, Jun) which is at the end or sprinkled inbetween. It's not an easy sell especially if someone goes to the review section and sees the one review about subversiveness/messing with the genre it works with.
Yeah, sure, I'll let you know about the fifth book when I finish it or smth interesting pops up while reading when I get to it. This arc having two books kinda helped me like it more than some earlier ones for some of the interactions and stuff it touches on. I mean, I can kinda guess already what's the trick with the murder so I'm thinking "if I find it obvious, there's bound to be more to the book besides that". Or at least I hope lol.
Hey, thanks for the friend request. It's cool that you found me through the subforum even if I gave up immediately on trying to post more thoughts there since it's dead and about a finished, niche title.
Also slowed down significantly with going through the novels due to real life stuff and book/LN reading being a mood I really need to get into unlike with comics, I guess.
