Is the current SAO really better than the ones before?
Yes, there's a lot of good anime right now!
the so called problems you want the anime to address are your misunderstanding. this anime isn't an anime where you find people emotionally insulting each other helping each other, because the characters are not enemies. but MATURE friends over the course of the show that have shown to really deeply care about each other and their works. such as supporting them when they're done with a trpg or encouraging them on when they've got an anime. it's an a coming of age story that has romance as a side element that deals with the struggles of working harder and trying to be better. whether as a writer, trying to determine where you're going in life, or as a friend for what you can do for one another.
plus romance shouldn't make up most of the character judgement. a person's outlooks, personality, and appropriate development to really feel that they are human and realistic is how you should judge it. again that misunderstanding that it's mainly focused around romance which is unbelievably wrong. as you say it's solely slice of life with characters doing normal things that people will do when having fun together, but within the hidden lines are the struggles with each other. it may not be deep plotwise really making you think but the characters are very well built along with the world around them, immersing you into the life of what a writer will be like and the joy of it. for a moment, you feel like you're typing up a siscon novel while trying to having fun against your angry editor. it's a series focused on fun entertaining event while showing how humans have emotions, why do they even have them in the first place, and how to cope with them.
