Based Cote review, I am basically of the exact same opinion as you. At this point the series is a guilty pleasure to me, it started regressing a lot after Y2V5 and as I grew up these faults became more and more apparent.

Obviously even before this point it had some faults like the overdramatization of some situations, the edginess (looking at you Ryuen) or the contrived strategies that shouldn't have worked. However despite all that the series has that certain something that kept me hooked. I like reading from time to time, but very rarely do I find a book that hooks me like these Novels did. No matter how objectively bad the writing became I never really felt "drained" after reading them and could finish some of them in 1-3 days which usually never happens for me.

The drop of quality is probably due to the time pressure, I am convinced the story could be much much better if they gave the author more time to think of actual good storylines and not rely on the annoying harem baits just to meet the page quota. The most frustrating part his how many characters suffered from this. Every major character just feels somewhat shallow to me, because their entire life MUST revolve around Ayanokoji (who gets glazed in every volume). It probably hit Amasawa, Nanase and Arisu (Y2V12), who are just there to do his biding no questions asked, the worst. The only character hasn't suffered from this is unironically Koenji who is somehow the best written character in the series to me.

As for your question why some people like Yamauchi and Ike got accepted to the school, I believe in Y1V7 it was explained that the tests and interviews actually didn't matter and the school already made up their mind, who they were going to accept and who not the goal was to get a balanced environment with all kinds of people to simulate microcosm of japanese society.

I would really like to know some of your other thoughts on the series, like your favourite characters, moments etc. Like you I want to see how the story evolves and ends.
