Agree, that's a brutal fight which give me chills/tears. I couldn't believe when she got quartered by that amount of spears of longinus. Poor Asuka.
«I do not understand what was going on in Hideaki Anno's mind when he directed the second rebuild movie. Was he trying to gather a larger audience by turning Asuka into a cliché?»
I think so.
" Another stated intention of the series is for it to be more accessible to non-fans than the original TV series and films were."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebuild_of_Evangelion
"It will be a work that can be enjoyed even if you have not seen the TV series. I want old hard-core fans and even fans who just know Eva from pachinko to view it as a single (i.e. stand-alone) movie. We welcome first-time viewers, so the contents will be simpler"
http://www.evaotaku.com/html/neweva.html
I think he is just milking the cow, so he made the series appellative to the other audience. Giving more fan service, likable characters, the hero of the show (Shinji), focus mainly in action etc. So it would become a more mainstream anime, and so viewed by a wider audience.
«I really hope the next movies address this inconsistency because if the current state of things persists, then Asuka will definitely be an easy-to-forget character.»
Maybe the new one. But that will not delete the original from our minds, like it didn't deleted the original Max Payne/Dragon Ball because the bad movies. (just an example)
«(also, what's up with her new last name? Sounds horrible if you ask me»
Yeah I also prefer the old one (maybe because the habit?). Just as curiosity all her names seems to come from aircrafts and Navy from World War II.
"Asuka's surname comes from the Japanese World War II aircraft carrier Soryu, her German surname from the American World War II aircraft carrier Langley, and her Rebuild surname from the Japanese World War II destroyer Shikinami."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asuka_Langley_Soryu
Let's see which route follow the next movies, but I'm not excited.
"I don't really appreciate how she is explicitly in love by Shinji, and how she forgot all that drama so easily, she just isn't so human/unique like in the original I think so. Also she doesn't like Kaji anymore. :("
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=110058
This Kaji 'love' is normal in Preadolescent girls which if you look to reality they tend to like/get attracted by someone much older. This Asuka seems much more like a real person than in 2.0.
Also I hated how they switched her with Touji:
"Besides to me switch Touji with Asuka in the doomed eva was one of worst recycling scenes I ever watched imo, in fact I was expecting that Touji would have a greater role in rebuild (with its dark eva) which he hadn't in the original series."
http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=285395
You know I am not also a big fan of the Rebuild series, I were excited with the 1.0 but they turn it bad with the 2.0. Too much action (some exaggerated) and less focus in characters/story/psychology. However I must admit that it have one of best art/sound ever, but that's expectable from an EVA.
Asuka from the original series is one of my favorite character of all time, I really love that bitchy side, but also that courage that her got even with her trauma/obscure past. The End Of Evangelion just come to reinforce my love by her.
Aside aside, I'm happy to hear that you think I'm a worthwhile reviewer. Trust me. I need to work more, harder. Become better. There are people out there with the power of rhetoric I wish I could master.
I loved Kanon. It's so like Clannad (with this all Ayu motive) but still awesome. But I wanted Yuichi to end up with Makoto so hard.
ef is on hold because I don't have the episodes to watch. That's all it is, really. It wasn't that it was slow either. I just figured out a lot of things too as they were happening, so I wasn't enticed to finish with immediacy. But mainly, I don't have the episodes.
