As a kid I liked watching MARVEL CARTOONS https://youtu.be/Wa13cp6iNGk . Firm favourite being XMEN https://youtu.be/I8BobmZglOk . Also loved comic book cartoons like TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES https://youtu.be/aW66cOteKHI .
I also saw stuff like SAMURAI PIZZA CATS without knowing it was anime from Japan too. https://youtu.be/lcMtd08WMNc

Soooooo lots saving the world & adventure stuff!

I was 14 when I started to know about anime from Japan. First anime was POKEMON https://youtu.be/4ndKeTleeEk I thought it was cute but just a kids show and about average.

Normally I wasnt allowed to watch cartoon network, however, when my parents went to movies, I would look after my brothers and sisters, but watch Cartoon Network, making sure my parents didn't know. One evening they had a new toonami show. They were showing COWBOY BEBOP https://youtu.be/VBfba5YI9_g & DRAGONBALL Z https://youtu.be/aWEJCGRISjY

These shows were more adult, edgy and violent but had some fun and adventure too.

I looked online for more kinds of shows like this. Found out they were from Japan which was interesting culturally and found some late night shows on scifi channel. By 15 years old I had seen DETONATOR ORGUN https://youtu.be/ksm26qdp0hY NEW DOMINION TANK POLICE https://youtu.be/PY1QmB_S5RQ and PATLABOUR 2 https://youtu.be/F4P8eOH89ow low key intros to mecha series. Most impact was DEVILMAN https://youtu.be/O2xECHF9jTI an 18 rated anime, which was even more adult and horrific but I was stunned and mesmerised by how different it was. Other classics like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira & Ghost in the Shell also played.

What kept my interest going for the next few years was loads more Dragonball Z https://youtu.be/f4lw2-YvH58 & 3 more shows all on Cartoon Network's expanded toonami slot.

By episode 2 of GUNDAM WING https://youtu.be/pxijE_FDFHA I was totally hooked by the political story, the aesthetic and space opera tone. ESCAFLOWNE https://youtu.be/YNTYLr3PF-A whisked me away to another fantasy realm of Mecha Knights, Atlantis & Divination, & TENSHI MUYO https://youtu.be/prixTjWbV_8 space harem adventure was downright funny.

Basically compared to Xmen and Marvel cartoons other cartoons that were around before it blew my little brain! Been a huge fan since. Being online I got chatting to other fans, bought some dvds on ebay as imports, and later shared fansubs with others in the community by post and found fanfiction. I told my cousin about it at 16 so we shared an interest and went to a couple of conventions together. Been hooked since.
