Hi I'm Chrissy and I don't check this schizz very often. I teach 4th grade these days, which has been my favorite teaching stint so far. My time is consumed with running mock elections and grading analytical essays, but once in awhile I come back to go digging for a new manga.
I update this occasionally just to prove that I still exist (current date: May 4, 2023.) Catch me in the summer maybe if there's a show worth watching.
There's some decrepit old blog posts here if you want to see what I used to think about stuff.

Here's my list scale:
1 - I irrationally hate it.
2 - Either spectacularly dull or I irrationally hate it.
3 - Probably outsourced.
4 - American Cheese. I eat it when no one's looking but I've never felt good about it.
5 - Parmesan Cheese. Delicious in the right moment, but needs something to go with it,
6 - Mozzarella Cheese. Worth going out of your way to add it to your cheese platter.
7 - Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Honestly why are you not eating it already?
8 - I have probably just like one actual gripe with it, and it's usually the fact that it's not literally cheese.
9 - A Deep-Dish Eight-Cheese Pizza with Triple Cheese and Cheese Sauce Instead of Tomato Sauce.
10 - The only thing better than cheese.
Feel free to leave a comment about anything! I don't always respond in a timely fashion, but I assure you I will eventually. That's why I'm on here after all, to talk about these things that I like.

You stated: "The premise assumes that only 14-year-old children can pilot giant robots. Why? Never touched on. Okay, so any 14-year-old in the world will do, right? Nope, it has to be the guy who's spearheading the whole project's son, who is also conveniently unwilling to do it. "
So actually this is explained, in a blink and youll miss it subtext kind of way.
Basically the evas are not robots at all, but are some sort of living creatures (i think it was episode 2 where shinji saw it's eye after the helmet fell off?). The reason is that, as shown in the opening sequence, no regular man made weapons can defeat an angel due to their AT fields, "the barrier of the soul". The evas were created from samples from Adam, with the exception of Evangelion Unit-01 which was created from the second angel, Lilith, which is what enables them to have the field and why they're so strong. The robot armor is actually more of a limiter.
What we learn is that each of the evangelions is imbued with the soul of the pilot's mother. In the case of Unit 01, this is the scene where we learned how Shinji's mother died in an accident with the eva, her soul was absorbed into the unit which is why Shinji is almost always the only one piloting it. Asuka's mom, who was a nerv scientist in the germany division, also went through a contact experiment which caused just a part of her soul to be absorbed into Unit 02; this is what caused Asuka's mom to go insane and is why in EOE we have the sequence where Asuka connects with her mother's soul right before fighting the eva series.
Rei's soul is not normal as the other two pilots since she's a clone. In one episode Kaworu states they are the human vessels for the souls of Adam and Lilith, respectively, and every time Rei reincarnates her soul is transferred into a new clone body (these clones are also what are used for the dummy plug system). This is why Rei is able to sync decently well with most of the evas.
So yeah, there is a very specific reasoning to it, but I think a lot of this info is revealed in what, on first watch, is kind of hard to understand technical talk / some of it is in the directors cut. I think the reason they don't do more to explain it is because ultimately the point of nge isn't a cool mecha anime, rather this is just a storytelling device for exploring the characters and the difficulties of human relations and communications...
If you're interested, id HIGHLY recommend searching "digi evangelion" on youtube, this (now retired) youtuber has some extremely good analysis of the series, especially the videos which focus in on certain episodes. Anyways thanks for your review !
