If I may clarify, elitism has absolutely nothing to do with having to use your brain when watching an anime. In fact, those types of anime I genuinely tend to enjoy a lot, simply because they often have interpretations of a message to bring forth and levels of depth to them which I enjoy puzzling together and experiencing, however, some may be painted as pretentious in my eyes as well. Over time your tastes will change, and that's perfectly normal. Some anime cater towards an audience who simply just want to relax such as a slice of life, which require little to no thinking about the story, while others like Serial Experiments Lain requires you to connect the dots. Both can be enjoyed in their own way. Anyways, thanks for getting back to me, as I didn't mean to come off as rude in any way, just a tad bit baffled that's all.
Your Tatami Galaxy review added on with your quote of "being different and being good are not the same thing," almost implies to me that you're an elitist at being an anti-elitist. Being different and being good is quite obviously not the same thing, and I don't think you don't need your own quote to say that. Interesting review to say the least coming from someone who gladly rates this show the lowest of the low to which works like "I want to eat your pancreas" and "Bunny Girl Senpai" you rate to surpass this show on all levels, but to each of their own.
