I'm pretty generous when it comes to rating anime, after all I couldn't make a better product than the vast majority of these studios. Rankings explained below.
-4: Ranging from a colossal failure to just an outright bad show Animes ranked in this range are shows that are wholly a waste of time. No one should watch anything in this rank because they fail at the most important task a show sets out to do: to entertain. If a show is "so bad it's good" it's at least entertaining somewhat, the shows in this tier are not that.
This is the quality of anime I'd expect of an amateur or inexperienced team, A 5 has many or some glaring flaws in fundamental aspects of anime such as (animation, concept, storytelling, character design, etc). A few flaws in key areas can distract and ruin shows that otherwise have potential.
Ever so slightly below the professional standard of a good show, but similarly just above the average mark. A 6 isn't necessarily a bad anime but one that you would be inclined to drop over time because it's reusing the same schticks or has common flaws that distract you from what it does do well.
Generally means an anime is "Mid" it does some things well and others poor but it's enjoyable enough to finish. I think of it as like a 70 on a test: tons of room to improve, but by no means close to failing.
-9: The type of anime I'd gladly recommend to any friend. They succeed at telling the story they set out to tell and often go beyond that with amazing characters, scores, action sequences, voice acting, directing, and creativity.
As MAL ranks it a 10 is masterpiece. I don't really believe a perfect score such as 10/10 can exist due to everyone interpreting art differently, therefore anything that ends up rated a 10 in my list is the type of art that personally appeals to me the most.
