I got a bit burned out from anime, so the weekly pacing of airing anime suits me. I just follow on what's new coming out and pick a few that I am interested in. It's gotten pretty rare for me to pick a finished anime and binge it as a result.
Elfen Lied's absolute peak of popularity was from around 2005-2009. MAL was only founded in 2008 and was very small at that time. As a result, Elfen Lied never had a super high rating on MAL. However, it was around 8.00 when I joined in 2014. I believe its peak rating on MAL was around 8.10.
Anime News Network is another story. ANN was the most popular ratings site before MAL came along and EL was pretty well liked on that site. To this day it has an arithmetic mean of 8.299 and is ranked in the top 250 anime of all time according to ANN. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4148
TLDR, ratings and popular perceptions of shows change over time. However, I wouldn't worry too much about rating scores and just like what you like.

I've gotten better, but I'm only partially fluent in Japanese at most.
