This "Movie" is a dirty trick. It brands it's self as a brand new Fruits basket film with a 85 minute run time. Half that run time is a crappy recap. YEP first 35 minutes is all material we've seen before. If they wanted to do like a 10 minute recap at the beginning to draw on the parallels between Toruhu x Kyo and Kuyoku x katsyu relationship sure, but we didn't need a full 35 minute recap of the last 3 episodes of the show.
Now for the last 50 minutes of the movie. It feels pretty rushed, but it is that
...
good Ole, quasi-shojo , melodrama, romance that we all love about FruBa. Horrible parenting, questionable romance, manipulation, and lots of crying it's all there. I would of liked to see more of Toruhu's Mom's biker gang / delinquent days she keeps bringing up how she's a horrible person who's done a lot of bad crap in her life, but we don't see any of it. Now don't get me wrong, I like a good cringe jailbait Japanese love story just as much as the next guy, but here the whole 25 year
old teacher x middle schooler thing just feels a bit weird. Most shows that do this type of romance show our characters being really conflicted about their "strange affair" but our male love interest doesn't have any remorse or second thoughts about going after his middle school student so it just comes off a little bit icky.
At the very end we get a nice little 3 minute never before seen Toruhu x kyo moment to really hammer down the relationship parallels between parent and daughter and then it ends.
The first 30 minutes is a Crap, no value, re-cap, waste of time. 1/10.
The 50 minutes of new material is a nice short little FruBa side story that does add to the FruBa lore. 8/10
Add them together and you get a 6 /10.
