I think you go a bit too far. People like Griffith for his whole character arc. Because it's interesting to see into his head and understand his motives and decisions. And not because he
sacrificed all of his friends in mere minutes.
However, there are certainly exceptions. Like, Donovan has a relatively large fanbase too despite the fact he doesn't have a single good attribute (and I'm being generous here).
He rapes young Guts so he is a perverted pedophile.
But I can understand how you feel. You probably noticed Death Note in 2nd place on the popularity list. Death Note is very exciting, but. I just don't understand why so many people choose Light as a favorite. Without spoilers I can tell you he is an asshole. But here is the difference: Griffith is not an asshole for a very long time. But Light Yagami is. Light's character is never likeable. His only attributes that might be attractive to someone is that he is a genius and he is out of his mind (I still don't understand but ok). People also say his decline is gradual. Why, of course, starting from zero and going towards negative infinity. When Death Note introduces likeable characters they are quickly killed. Bravo. Just why?
No problem, I like writing long essays. AOT is worth your time. And about Berserk, when you reach the 2016 version, be prepared for terrible CGI. But the op and ed of Berserk 2016 are amazing. Especially that op. Man, I can't find the words to describe how powerful it hits.
One thing you should know about Attack on titan is that it's Japanese name is Shingeki no Kyojin. With this information you will understand this. And although popularity doesn't equal to good automatically, this anime is brilliant when it comes to intricate plot.
The thing I like about it is it's layers. Basically your worldview on this show is destroyed every new season and you have to reconsider everything. It also looks gorgeous, has excellent fight scenes and very good music. It's only weakness are the characters. They aren't bad and still well done, but in my opinion the creators clearly focused on the plot rather than the characters.
Your friends also know that the op and ed are quite awkward at first. xD Berserk was my first anime series 5 years ago (because I already saw anime films) and it gave me so many fond memories. I remember binge reading the manga chapters on my small ebook reader during vacation. It feels so nostalgic, sitting on the attic of our small wooden house in the hills. And manually changing the screen orientation to landscape every time, because the reader didn't have gyroscope. ^^ (I still have it, it runs Android 2.1. It's so old that the web browser can't open 90% of the webpages because it's missing some components.)
Starting with Berserk. Exactly like me. You will love it. Also, don't skip the opening and ending songs. The more the story progresses the more memorable they will become.

And that's all. I quit ranting for now.
