How I Rate
The point of using scores is to compare things that I think are around the same level of enjoyment and quality.

I don't put a huge amount of stock into objective quality since each person's watch experience is subjective to who they are.

My scores are usually based on how good/effective I think a show's parts are, and as a whole, but also on how much I liked watching it and/or thinking about it.

Sometimes I can tell a show is good but not enjoy it (Cowboy Bebop) or know it's not great and like it.

• If it's below a 5, I probably didn't like it all that much, or outright hated it. My baseline of quality here is that SAO is a 4/10.
  
• A 5 is what I'd attribute to "mediocre" or boring shows. Not necessarily awful but I didn't enjoy them all that much. Many unspecial and generic anime fall here.
  
• 6 is a positive score and really means it was worth watching but nothing really special.
  
• 7. Anything I give above a 7 is something I think shouldn't be missed.
  
• 8 is where I put shows that are pretty great, and/or didn't resonate super deeply.
  
• 9 is a must-watch, succeeding where an 8 fell flat. Shows I liked that I think are flawlessly effective in what they're trying to be, but that I didn't love, get put here.
  
• 10 out of 10 means it's a favourite that I think is absolutely essential.
  
  10 doesn't mean completely perfect, but it means it did what it was trying to do, and more, 100% effectively.
  Not only that, but the experience of watching it, and the time afterwards spent thinking about it, were memorable and resonated deeply with me. This is the reason I didn't give Cowboy Bebop a 10.

Some of these, I haven't watched in years, but at the time they were among the best experiences I'd had watching anime.

And remember: The one episode-test rule is better than the three episode-test, and never marathon a show your first time through!
